But an argument could be made that the most important traditions are food traditions, because let’s face it, food is such an important part of this holiday. There is nothing better than a Thanksgiving pie, made fresh and sweet. There are several Essex County businesses that serve up sweet treats – the perfect pinnacle of pie for a Thanksgiving dinner. We’ve rounded up where to find Thanksgiving pies in Montclair and the greater Essex County area in New Jersey. A family-run establishment, Gencarelli’s Bakery has been around since 1975 and is a well-recognized name around northern New Jersey. There are tons of unique flavors available, like French apple, peach lattice, lemon meringue, sugar-free options, and more. There is a second location in Wayne, New Jersey, and both open at 6AM every day except for New Year’s Day — which means this is a great choice if you need something more last minute, though we recommend placing an order beforehand. Orders must be placed in person or by phone — though it seems there may be an online ordering system established soon.

Jayce Baudry French Pastry | 17 Church Street, Montclair

This French bakery has put away its stunning Halloween cakes and is now thinking about Thanksgiving. The team is taking pre-orders online starting now. Pick-up options begin as early as November 14th and run through the 24th (the shop will be open on Thanksgiving) — and there will also be in-store inventory as long as supplies last. The Thanksgiving menu can be found here — and it features stunning (we mean it, stunning) pies like apple cinnamon crumb pie, pumpkin spice pie, and chocolate bourbon pecan pie. There’s also a pumpkin maple cheesecake on the menu.

Mattarello Bakery & Café | 254 Bellevue Avenue, Montclair

With doughnuts, cakes, gluten-free items, and more, this local Montclair bakery is also a great place to buy pies for the holidays. From apple pie to Nutella pie to apricot, there are lots of yummy choices here. You can find the menu for online ordering here — and we recommend getting your order in soon to ensure you can get your pie in time for Thanksgiving.

Nicolo’s Italian Bakery and Deli | 6 Baldwin Street, Montclair

Seasonal pies are the name of the dessert game at this Italian eatery. Blueberry, wheat, pumpkin, and apple pies are all available, which partner well with the other desserts like zeppole, cookies, and muffins. Nicolo Zecchino opened this bakery in 1967, and his traditions and practices are still practiced today by his family.

Palmer’s Bakehouse | 1 Highland Place, Maplewood

Though the menu may change frequently at Palmer’s Bakehouse, the Thanksgiving menu is set for 2022. This includes the apple crumb pie, pecan pie, pumpkin cream pie, sweet potato cheesecake pie, and more. There are also savories, sides, and even breakfast offerings as well.

This bakery’s specialty is sweet and savory British pies, alongside groceries imported from the UK. The shop offers in-store and online delivery, and the sweet pies, like key lime, double-crust apple, and chocolate mousse pie, complement savory pies and hearty soups for a one-stop Thanksgiving shop. The Pie Store’s turkey and stuffing pie could be a new Thanksgiving dinner option — or the sweet potato, blue cheese, and onion pasty.
