While we may say that there is nothing more American than apple pie, the history of apple may surprise you. With that being said, it doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy some flaky crust, fruit-filled goodness, and The Pie Store in Montclair is soothing our pie-loving souls. Read on to learn more about what’s baking and brewing in The Pie Store and in its sister shop, The Tea Store both located in Upper Montclair.
The British Isles in the Garden State
The Pie Store and The Tea Store both serve up traditional British fare and are a hit with locals and those looking for a taste of Britain (or just delicious baked goods).
Opened by Samantha Codling, owner, and chief baker, The Pie Store sells homemade baked goods, as well as British imports like candies and snacks not readily found in the U.S. The Tea Store, located just a couple of doors down from The Pie Store, sells U.K. imports, responsibly-sourced luxury teas, as well as treats from The Pie Store, like its famous scones.

The Pie Store’s menu includes many of the sweet pies you know and love like apple, Key Lime, coconut cream, and chocolate mousse, and a wide selection of savory pies like mushroom, cheese, and onion, and pasties.
Pasties are a traditional British pastry that looks a bit like an empanada. Pasties are usually filled with meat and veggies. Whether you decide to enjoy something sweet, something savory, or both you can’t go wrong indulging in a pastry from The Pie Store.
Continuing to honor its British roots, The Pie Store sells something not often seen in American bakeries: banoffee pie. Banoffee pie is a traditional British pie featuring bananas and toffee hence the name Banoffee. Banoffee is only sold on the weekends and is a must-try to satisfy your sweet tooth.
A Hot Cuppa
After purchasing your pies, stop by The Tea Store to make sure you have something hot to drink alongside them. The shop sells global teas and British imports like biscuits and candies. The teas sold in the shop come in loose-leaf and bagged forms, and there are dozens of varieties to choose from.
