A new bakery and gift shop officially opened this week in downtown Montclair. Whether you’re in need of a custom birthday cake, chocolate-covered strawberries, or another sweet treat, this spot located at 342 Bloomfield Avenue has it all. Stuff by SJ is a woman-owned, small business run by owner Sarah Jean Miller, known as SJ. This designer and confection artist worked in retail before venturing into the baking world, so the bakery has a special emphasis on providing high-quality customer service in addition to the baked goods.
SJ was not always a Jersey Girl – she grew up outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before moving to the Garden State in 2014. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, SJ tried her hand at starting her own custom baking business – and Stuff by SJ was born. Her initiative at the shop is focused on customer service, being customer-driven, and having a ‘never say no’ outlook. Stuff by SJ wants to take care of and connect with the community as best as possible.

About the Shop
Stuff by SJ started in 2020 as an online-only business before permanently setting up shop on Bloomfield Avenue in March due to overwhelming social media support from the Montclair community.
The shop’s doors opened on March 23, and the store will host a grand opening this weekend, April 2nd and 3rd. Members of the community are invited to visit the store, explore the space, and taste some of the samples that will be available.

The bakeshop sells custom baked goods and chocolate treats for all occasions. Custom orders require advance notice, while the shop is stocked daily with a rotating variety of freshly baked goodies. Custom orders can also be prepared for special diets such as vegan treats and gluten-free.

Taking a deeper dive into the menu, Stuff by SJ has a wide variety of baked goods and treats to enjoy. Some of the items shoppers can buy at the brick-and-mortar store include custom cakes, cupcakes, chocolates by the dozen, and custom gift baskets.
There’s also a weekly cake slice special and slices of SJ’s original cookies and cream cake to try out. The cupcake varieties include tres leches, SJ’s Campfire Smores Cupcake, and more.
The handmade chocolates include cake popsicles and bites, chocolate-covered Oreos, chocolate, and caramel dipped pretzel rods, hot cocoa bombs, and other decadent treats.
The spot also has a full coffee and beverage menu, with drink choices like iced lattes and macchiatos as well as cappuccinos and Americanos. There is a seating area in the shop for customers to sit down and enjoy their goodies.
