European Style Café, Bloom Cakes + Bakery, Opens in Caldwell

There’s a new bakery in town, Bloom Cakes & Bakery, and it’s already getting a lot of attention. The cream puffs are what customers have been craving and asking for. And, other specialty items are selling out quickly. Located at 79 Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell, Bloom Cakes recently opened and is owned by a husband and wife from Turkey. 10 Bojangles Restaurants Are Coming to North Jersey

Short Hills Mall Hosts First-Ever Easter Bunny Photo Op for Pups

The Mall at Short Hills hosted its first-ever photo op for furry friends to have their picture taken with the Easter Bunny. On Monday, April 4th shoppers could bring their dog to shake paws with the Easter Bunny and ring in springtime. The event was sponsored by Symbios Animal Health, with net proceeds from Bunny Paws benefitting St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center of Madison.


Out Montclair Hosts Spring Fling Fundraiser

What was once expected to be a 150-person event ended up hosting 275 people at this year’s Out Montclair Spring Fling Fundraiser event. The night featured food, drinks, a dessert station, and a specialty pride cocktail. Vendors included Moses Olivia + Associates, 18 Label Studios, Events by Joni, The Montclair Girl, Little Daisy Bakeshop, Van Hook Cheese + Grocery, Egan + Sons, Brick and Dough, and Blooms in Hand.


New Jersey Receives First Credit Rating Upgrade Since 2005

S&P Global Ratings raised its rating on New Jersey’s General Obligation (GO) Bonds to an A- up from a BBB+, reported Tap Into. This is the first upgrade for New Jersey from S&P since 2005. Various other long-term and underlying ratings have been raised from BBB to BBB+.


West Orange Man Arrested for Criminal Offenses + Weapons Possession

A West Orange man was placed under arrest inside his apartment after evading police and not following commands from the officers in pursuit, per Baristanet. An emergent warrant was issued once the police were inside and observed a handgun magazine in plain view. A search of the residence revealed three handguns, one AR-15 Assault Rifle, three loaded extended high capacity magazines, and many other criminal offenses. Christopher Medina is currently being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility.


Free Online Teen Arts Festival for Essex County High School Students

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. is inviting high school students from Essex County to take part in the first-ever Essex County Teen Arts Festival, per Baristanet. This festival is completely devoted to visual arts and it will be held completely online. The festival is completely free to enter and the last day to enter will be Thursday, April 14th. 


Veteran Media Critic Eric Boehlert Struck + Killed by Train

Montclair resident and veteran media critic Eric Boehlert died when his bicycle was struck by an NJ Transit train, per Montclair Local. Boehlert is survived by his wife, Tracy Breslin, and his two children. His death was mourned on Wednesday by journalists, media critics, politicians, and admirers and they all took to social media to express their grief.


Serial Killer Charged with Fourth Murder in Essex County

Khalil Wheeler-Weaver has been charged with a fourth murder, per Montclair Local. He was charged last week with the 2016 murder of 15-year-old Mawa Doumbia of Newark. Wheeler-Weaver had been previously convicted in 2019 of three other killings and was sentenced to 160 years in prison.


Montclair Library To Commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day

The Montclair Public Library will be commemorating Yom HaShoah, also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day, reported this press release. The two programs will be co-presented by the Montclair Interfaith Clergy Association on Thursday, April 28th. The first program will take place at 2:30PM and the second will take place at 5:30PM, and you can find more information in the previously mentioned press release.


YMCA of Montclair Opens Lactation Spaces

The YMCA of Montclair has officially opened two dedicated spaces for lactation and infant feeding inside its Park Street location, per Montclair Local. Each room will contain a rocking chair, a changing table, and an inviting atmosphere for the parents. Nursing mothers and parents in need of quiet spaces to feed their children will be able to use these spaces. 


Turtle Back Zoo Closing Outdoors Exhibits with Birds

All outdoor exhibits featuring birds at the Turtle Back Zoo are set to close due to the emergence of a newly discovered avian flu, per Montclair Local. There have been no cases at the zoo, but there have been cases in the wild bird populations in the surrounding areas. The affected exhibits include ones with flamingos, bald eagles, condors, and hawks.


Montclair Jazz Legend Wins 8th Grammy Award

Christian McBride is a jazz icon in Montclair and he just took home his eighth Grammy Award on Sunday, per Patch. His latest Grammy was won with “For Jimmy, Wes, and Oliver,” a studio album by McBride and his big band. It won the award for the “Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album.”


New Trees Planted at Brookdale Park

The Brookdale Park Conservancy and the NJ Tree Foundation recently planted 21 oak and dogwood trees at Brookdale Park, reported Patch. Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. said the county works closely with the conservancy. The trees were planted due to a recent partnership.


Montclair’s Fourth of July Parade Returns

Montclair’s annual 4th of July parade will be returning after a two-year hiatus, per Baristanet. The Grand Marshals of the parade are Toni’s Kitchen and the Human Needs Food Pantry. The parade will be dedicated to the memory of the late Al Pelham, with the blessing from his family.


Pancake Relay Race Raises $2k for Ukrainian Relief Efforts

The Pancake Fun Relay race happened on Bloomfield Avenue on Sunday morning and it raised nearly $2,000 for Ukrainian relief organizations, per Montclair Local. This event was organized by St. James Spiscopal Church and the Upper Montclair Business Association. Seventeen teams of four participated in the event and close to 100 people were in attendance.

The George in Montclair recently hosted Diane Keaton and the entire cast and crew of a new movie filming in Essex County. The boutique hotel has a modern style and 31 rooms which were used to host the entire cast and crew of the movie.


Montclair Art Museum to Host Art in Bloom Exhibition

The Montclair Art Museum is scheduled to open the Art in Bloom pop-up floral exhibition soon. The exhibition will be at the Montclair Art Museum from Wednesday, May 18th to Sunday, May 22nd. Art in Bloom is one of the Museum’s most cherished events within the community.
