On October 4th, a new Mexican burger spot joined the Bloomfield food scene — and its opening was one to remember. The restaurant, Hamburguesa, draws influence from Mexico City burger carts to offer street-style burgers, loaded with unique ingredients like pineapple, chili — and sometimes, hotdogs. To promote the opening of its new Bloomfield location at 393 West Passaic Avenue, Hamburguesa doled out free hamburgers during the lunch and dinner rushes of its opening day. The event was a whopping (pun intended) success, and by the end of the day, Hamburguesa had given out 700 free burgers. Now, the restaurant announced on its Instagram that it would also be opening a Montclair location at 706 Bloomfield Avenue. The opening date is Tuesday, October 18th — and the team will once again be giving out free burgers from 12PM – 3PM and 5PM – 8PM. Read on for what we know about this new restaurant and its special opening day.

Origins

The story of Hamburguesa dates back to 20 years ago, when the restaurant’s founder, Antonio, was still living in Mexico City. At the time, Antonio was selling burgers out of a food cart in the city streets, and he would routinely play Spanish rock from inside the cart.

As his burgers gained popularity, Antonio ventured to the states to share his cultural reimagining of the classic dish. The first Hamburguesa location officially opened in Carlstadt in 2019. The restaurant boasted delicious food and a lively atmosphere — with Spanish rock always coming through the speakers.

With the success of the Carlstadt location, Antonio wanted to expand his horizons, and set his sights on Bloomfield. His hope was to continue spreading Mexico City-style cuisine throughout New Jersey. After opening in Bloomfield, the spot announced on its Instagram that it will be opening in Montclair as well — at 706 Bloomfield Avenue on October 18th.

Opening Day

The Bloomfield Hamburguesa storefront is located at 393 West Passaic Avenue. Per Patch, on October 4th, the outpost’s official opening day, owners encouraged locals to stop by and pick up a free burger. The burgers were offered from 11AM-3PM and 5PM-8PM, just in time for daily lunch and dinner rushes.

As it turns out, people love Mexican Street burgers, especially when they’re free. By the end of the day, Hamburguesa had given out 700 burgers — and on the restaurant’s Instagram, locals were singing Hamburguesa’s praises.

The opening date for the Montclair location is Tuesday, October 18th — and locals can get free burgers from 12PM – 3PM and 5PM – 8PM. As for just how many burgers get handed out this time around, we’ll have to wait and see.

What to Expect

The Hamburguesa menu is expansive, with a variety of unique burger offerings. “La Hawaiiana,” for example, is a medley of beef, cheese, and pineapple, while “La Suiza” is a triple-meat powerhouse with ham, bacon, and beef. The restaurant has a vegetarian option as well, which is a mushroom burger with the works. Patrons can pair their burger with papas (Mexican-style chips) or french fries, and wash it all down with a milkshake of their choosing.

Burger prices at Hamburguesa range from $8-$10, but will vary depending on the addition of a side or beverage. You can sit in-house and enjoy the Mexico City vibe or order for pick-up.
