Walking into Holsten’s is not only like taking a step back in time but, also like being on the set of a TV show… well, one in particular. In addition to the ice cream made in-house, this confectionary also has several hot items on the menu, including a selection of classic burgers. The options are super simple: choose between a beef, turkey, or veggie patty, maybe add cheese or bacon and that’s it. Add an order of beer-battered onion rings on the side and thank us later.

The menu at Six Points Pub is filled with classic bar fare like loaded fries and tots, pizzas, wings, nachos, and of course, burgers. The El Diablo Burger with jalapeños, pepper jack cheese, and chipotle mayo will certainly heat things up and the Bloomfield Signature is topped with Taylor Ham, egg, and American cheese, which is perfect for brunch. For customers steering clear of meat, there is also an Impossible burger that can be customized to their liking.

There are few things tastier than a good burger and fries (ok, maybe we’re biased) but, when that burger comes from a health-conscious and sustainable company like Bareburger, it makes the experience that much better. Guests can take comfort knowing there is an option for everyone: there are gluten-free buns or no buns at all; various proteins, including multiple meatless options; and an ample selection of sides. Don’t sleep on the sauces either — there are over a dozen choices ranging from the classics like ketchup and mustard to the creative like the wham bam sauce and the mango jalapeno teriyaki. All of the sauces are gluten-free, and several are vegan, so there are plenty of choices for everyone. Diners can get fancy and take advantage of the BYO policy for the perfect pairing to their burger.

If you’ve never considered it before, it might be time to try topping your burger with sriracha, peanut butter, and bacon. At Diesel + Duke, it’s called the S.P.B.B. and it’s a customer favorite for a reason. This burger joint, which has grown to multiple locations around New Jersey, has a straightforward menu filled with all the classics like a Breakfast Burger with bacon, cheddar, and egg or the Smokeshow with BBQ sauce, onion rings, bacon, and cheddar. There is also a Beyond Meat burger for vegetarians. Complete the meal with a side of poutine and a milkshake for good measure.
Egan + Sons | 118 Walnut Street

Egan + Sons is not only a local favorite, but it has cemented itself into the fabric of Montclair. The Irish pub offers a simple, classic burger and a double burger with lettuce, tomato, and onion, in addition to the Tipperary Burger. The Tipperary is topped with blue cheese, Irish bacon, and Ballymaloe chutney — Ballymaloe is a cooking school and an international food company based in Ireland known for its relishes and sauces. Pair it with one of the numerous chip options, a.k.a. fries, for the perfect combo.

Tierney’s Tavern | 136-138 Valley Road
This is our sleeper pick. When customers pop in for a beer, they would be remiss not to try Tierney’s famous Buddy Burger. Sesame seed bun, burger patty, onions, maybe add cheese or bacon or both, throw it on a paper plate, and there you have it. It’s a tasty, no-frills, and inexpensive way to satisfy that burger craving without making it a big to-do. Stop in on the weekends and enjoy live music too.
