There’s nothing better than visiting a favorite local coffee shop, grabbing a drink and a pastry, and sitting with a computer, a book, or a friend to unwind or be productive (or maybe both). It’s also important to mention the added delight of outdoor seating for enjoying the crisp autumn days or cooler summer mornings. We’ve compiled a list of some of the best coffee shops in the area with outdoor seating — both roomy patios and more limiting areas. Read on for a list of coffee shops that have outdoor seating in Montclair and the surrounding Essex County area.

Boonton Coffee Co. | 602 Main Street, Boonton

Boonton Coffee Co. may have a pretty big indoor space for a local coffee shop but it also features tables for two on its outdoor patio. It even hosts open mic nights twice a month and a First Friday Songwriter Series so creatives also get a taste of the cozy atmosphere. Special events like trivia nights, wine tastings, and more also take place occasionally, so be sure to check its website for the list of upcoming events.

Chestnut Cafe + Eatery | 338 Passaic Avenue, Nutley

Chestnut Cafe + Eatery in Nutley may very well be the New Jersey counterpart to Luke’s Diner (iykyk). This cafe is known for its booked and busy Mother’s Day reservations and infamous croissant French toast, but it also has a full coffee bar with a changing menu of special flavors. Its patio is a great place to witness Nutley’s colorful fall foliage as patrons can sip on a lavender latte or raspberry cream hot chocolate.

Il Vecchio Cafe | 234 Bloomfield Avenue, Caldwell

While customers tend to think of Calandra’s first when it comes to this address, visitors may find themselves pleasantly surprised by finding Il Vecchio Cafe sitting inside with a tasteful seating area on its patio. In fact, its menu was voted Best Outdoor Suburban in Essex Magazine’s 2023 Best of Essex Contest. The space is also dog-friendly, too, so don’t be shy to bring a furry friend along for a nice cappuccino.

Java Love | 49 Church Street, Montclair

A Montclair favorite, Java Love has bright orange tables for two that sit alongside the iconic Church Street. Guests can sip on creations made by the baristas who work inside while people watch or enjoy a fresh pastry. No matter the occasion, Java Love Montclair is a great location to catch up with friends, complete some computer work outdoors, or to just take in the New Jersey suburbia views.

Jola Coffee | 15 Bloomfield Avenue, North Caldwell

Jola Coffee is a tiny but mighty coffee shop that packs a lot of flavor. While its picnic-like outdoor seating sits on the quieter side of Bloomfield Avenue, it is also a proud small-business supporter as its milks are sourced from Battenkill Creamery in Salem, New York, and its coffee is roasted fresh from Durham, North Carolina. Its current season specials include ‘Almost Thanksgiving’ (espresso, housemade brown sugar, orange, and cranberry syrup) and ‘Fall For Matcha’ (matcha green tea latte with brown sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon syrup).

Ladyfingers Bakery + Bar | 1109 Broad Street, Bloomfield

fannys

While the out-of-its-world bakery has some quirky seating on the inside, with booths and seating stools of different shapes and colors, it also has plenty of patio seating. Ladyfingers Bakery + Bar has numerous tables and chairs on the shared front patio which sits right next door to sister businesses Fanny’s and The Brookdale. Enjoy the craft coffees with a Simpsons-sized doughnut while watching the traffic pass by on the same street The Sopranos series finale was filmed.

Nothing beats an outdoor coffee chat with a friend, especially in Montclair’s quieter streets. Any passer-by will notice how Paper Plane Coffee Co. is always busy on any given day, and particularly during the warmer months when customers sit outside on the corner of Fullerton Avenue and Claremont Avenue. While the coffee shop went viral for its original airplane seats on the inside, patrons also have the option of sitting on the cute blue-and-white chairs or benches outside when the store is too crowded or the weather is too nice to miss.

Sweet Kitchen | 533 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair

Sweet Kitchen is a dessert haven among Montclarions, as its motto is “chasing the new flavor,” and it also provides the proper outdoor seating to bask in the goodness of its delectable treats. Tables complete with shady umbrellas for the summer months are outside where customers can enjoy an iced chai or even a full meal of either breakfast or lunch options. Trust MG when we say that no matter which drink is chosen to enjoy on the patio, the photo op is sure to be a successful one.

Three Daughters Baking Co. | 12 Vose Avenue, South Orange

three daughters shop

In the hustle and bustle of downtown South Orange, Three Daughters Baking Co. is placed on a quiet side street that can make anyone feel as though they’re living their “best Jersey life.” Red tables for two are stationed right outside of the shop, which serves up coffees, pastries, and homemade quiches that change in flavor frequently. Chow Town Food Tours may seat its groups inside due to the number of guests in tow, but the outdoor seating is great for a catch-up (or tea-spilling) session.
