When visiting the Garden State there is an item that there certainly is not a shortage of and that is hot dogs. These classic American staples are prepared in so many different ways, it’s best to just try them all. From boiled to fried and topped with all the savory goodness anyone could dream of, hot dogs are a sure-fire crowd-pleaser. We rounded up all the spots in North Jersey that serve hot dogs. Now for the hardest task, picking a favorite.

Denville Dog + Grill | 99 Bloomfield Avenue, Denville

Denville Dog serves Stewart’s Root Beer on tap, along with a variety of other American food. It is only open for the spring and summer, and there’s both indoor and outdoor seating. The classic hot dog spot fits the Stewart’s vibe with colorful awnings and an outdoor ordering counter. As for ordering, obviously, try a hot dog — but there are other choices like burgers, fries, cheesesteaks, popcorn shrimp, onion rings, milkshakes, root beer floats, and more.

Dickie Dee’s | 380 Bloomfield Avenue, Newark 

Don’t let the name fool you, this pizza spot is actually known for its famous Italian hot dogs. For the last three generations, Dickie Dee’s has been serving hot dogs and sausage topped with onions, peppers, and potatoes. Hot cherry peppers are a crowd favorite to pile on as well.

Dover Grill | 240 US-46, Dover

The Dover Grill is known for its quality ingredients and exceptional taste.  An extensive list of all beef hot dogs can be found at this local spot. Fun combos are offered such as four different types of “All The Way” dogs with toppings such as mustard, chopped onions, chili sauce, and cheese. Or get “The Soprano” complete with garlic powder and parmesan.

Goffle Grill | 1140 Goffle Road, Hawthorne

A tagline of “Tasty eats that can’t be beat” screams that this place has some good hot dogs. Serving up both Texas Weiner-style dogs deep fried and covered in homemade chili and a classic Italian hot dog, Goffle Grill is a must-stop spot for those in Jersey who love this meal.

Hank’s Frank’s | 210 US-46, Lodi

This tiny hot dog joint with huge flavor is about a mile away from the Teterboro airport. Since 1959 Hank’s Frank’s has been serving up some of the tastiest dogs in New Jersey. Unlike most other hot dog spots, these franks are boiled and served with toppings like onions in red sauce.

Hiram’s | 1345 Palisades Avenue, Fort Lee

“Dogs, Burger, and Brews since 1932” is the tagline of this NJ eatery.  Just head to Hiram’s Instagram page to get a peek at its specialties. The page is filled with bread and butter, fully loaded hot dogs, cheese fries, onion rings, and beer

Hot Dog Johnny’s | 333 US-46, Belvidere

Hot Dog Johnny’s had very humble beginnings in 1944 with just a small stand run by husband and wife team John and Louise. Since its inception, the stand has grown into a full roadside eatery. What hasn’t changed is the great flavor and pride for hot dogs. Now run by John’s daughter, Hot Dog Johnny’s will be a NJ staple for years to come.

When serving a big crowd, J+G is a great choice. After ordering any 10 hot dogs, the 11th comes free. Be sure to please your guests with dogs smothered in loads of free toppings such as ketchup, mustard, sauerkraut, onion, pickles, relish, and more. Middlesex Texas Weiner | 1355 Bound Brook Road, Middlesex

For almost 30 years Tony and Paul Kamarinopoulos have been leading the charge of making juicy burgers and hot dogs in Middlesex, NJ. Other dishes that show up on the menu include chili cheesesteak, veggie burgers, and fish filets. Be sure to check out daily lunch and dinner specials as well.

Rutt’s Hutt | 417 River Road, Clifton

Known as “The Home of the Ripper”, Rut’s Hutt has been serving up fried hot dogs in Jersey since 1928. Perhaps just as famous as its hot dogs is the relish, made from a special blend of mustard and spices. Visitors can expect an extensive menu of hot dogs, all-meat chili, fish and barbeque sandwiches, tuna melts, and club sandwiches. Being named on the list of 1,000 You Must See Before You Die in the U.S. and Canada, Rut’s Hutt is sure to not disappoint.

The Hot Grill | 669 Lexington Avenue, Clifton

“All the way” is a common term heard at this old-time favorite Texas Weiners spot. Guests of this world-famous hot dog joint know this phrase to mean the hot dog, cheeseburger, tuna sandwich, roast beef sandwich, or fried fish sandwich will be loaded with mustard, chopped onions, and chili sauce for no additional charge. In business for decades, The Hot Grill has become a staple in New Jersey.

Tommy’s Italian Sausage + Hot Dogs | 900 2nd Avenue, Elizabeth

Known equally as well for its hot dogs as its potatoes in a cup, Tommy’s Italian Sausage and Hot Dogs are a staple in the Garden State. Some guests even say residents of Elizabeth can’t claim the town if they haven’t had this famous eatery. The classic Italian combo of hot dog and sausage can be topped with many tasty items from the menu.
