Hyssop Beauty Apothecary was named after the medicinal plant native to Southern Europe, a powerful herb known for its cleansing and purifying properties. It is the perfect name for a skincare company that believes in natural skincare with ethical values. The company makes small-batch skincare and beauty products in-house by hand and with a sprinkling of reiki healing magic. The gender-neutral items are made from renewable ingredients, with sustainable manufacturing and packaging. Cruelty-free and primarily vegan, Hyssop does its best to source local herbs, limit its coloring to natural dyes, and use “high-quality, beneficial ingredients in their most pure and natural form.”

Founded in Nutley in early 2020, Hyssop Beauty Apothecary almost didn’t make it. The Covid lockdown swept through the region, leaving retailers agonizing. Still, owner Mary tapped into her understanding of herbs and natural fragrances with industrial amounts of alcohol to make the company’s hero product: hand sanitizer. Hyssop Beauty weathered the storm in a brilliant display of adaptability, solidifying itself into the Nutley community and creating a line of cult-favorite beauty products.

Hyssop Beauty’s products are free from artificial colors, fragrances, and synthetic chemicals. The company takes skin and the products used on it very seriously, providing clients with the most natural ingredients possible. Hyssop’s skincare line is gentle and clean, making it popular with dermatologists and estheticians. The shop prioritizes recyclable materials to keep waste at a minimum and uses glass or compostable materials. Customers who return the glass containers get a $0.25 credit for each container, applicable to their next order.
