While the United States is famous for many different types of food, few things are more American than barbeque. Chefs native to the US and those who immigrated here have taken the cuisine to make it their own. Adding to that list of chefs is Marcus Samuelsson. Marcus originally hails from Ethiopia and Sweden and rose to fame here in the U.S. with his well-known restaurants worldwide and his appearances on Food Network specials. After living in the U.S. for over 30 years, he wanted to pay homage to these classic dishes with his own spin and style of service. Enter Vibe BBQ, located at 56 Halsey Street in Newark, a quick-service BBQ eatery focused on smoked meats. The Montclair Girl sat down with General Manager Luis Guaman and visited the location to learn more and try it out. Read on for more about Vibe BBQ in Newark, New Jersey.
The Space
Marcus Samuelsson is no stranger to this Halsey Street location. Prior to Vibe BBQ, the space was home to Marcus B&P, which opened back in 2017. The update provides space for an open floor plan where guests can get a glimpse into the kitchen if seated in the dining area, or enjoy a spirited beverage at the bar complete with TVs. The full menu is served at both seating options.

When entering Vibe BBQ, one will immediately gravitate toward the huge “Southern Comfort” light-up sign on the wall. Before even being greeted by the lovely staff, it is clear guests are in for a good time and an even better meal. When asked about the, well, ‘vibe’ of Vibe BBQ, Luis explained “Vibe BBQ focuses on traditional American barbecue cuisine infused with diverse global influences.” While Chef Samuelsson’s other restaurants may showcase his signature fusion of flavors from around the world, Vibe BBQ is dedicated to celebrating the authentic taste and culture of classic American BBQ. It provides a laid-back dining experience reminiscent of backyard gatherings, where patrons can enjoy mouthwatering BBQ dishes.”
The Food
Marcus says that he is drawn to the vibe of BBQ, which is where the name is from. All dishes are made to feel like a source of comfort, many can be eaten with your hands, and have the warmth of a backyard cookout. Luis shared that Marcus believes “the vibe is what makes BBQ culture so special in America”. From appetizers such as M’s Cornbread and hot cauliflower bites to an array of smoked meat options for an entree, the feeling of eating in the South with family and friends comes alive right in downtown Newark. Classic side dishes like mac and cheese, smoked baked beans, granny’s greens, and fries live on the menu as well, each with its own Marcus Samuelsson flare. For example, the mac and cheese is topped with brown butter crumbs and chives while the fries are hit with a BBQ spice.

The main attraction is the smoked meat combos. Ranging from options of two-meat, three-meat, or four-meat platters, these entrees are for the hungry guest who is ready for the full experience. Each combo comes with your choice of meat, one side, white bread, house pickles, and M’s BBQ sauce. The combos range in price from $22 to $32. While meat lovers flock to this location, there are options for vegan friends. An Impossible meat burger with a side of BBQ chips or fries can be ordered. The littlest of guests aren’t to be left out either. VibeBBQ has a “kids feast” menu with three entree options, all served with fries.
