In 1912, Charles Walter Nichols of New York City purchased farmland in New Jersey in what is now West Orange. His 40-acre estate became known as Pleasantdale Farms. Nicholas often frequented Europe developing a fondness and appreciation for the architecture of Northern France and Southern England. When he returned home, he decided to construct a home on his West Orange property inspired by the beauty he saw across the pond. He contacted architect Augustus N. Allen to construct the home and tasked Augustus E. Furlong with the landscaping. The home was completed in 1933 and is located at 757 Eagle Rock Avenue in West Orange.

In 1994, the Knowles family acquired the estate, now tucked into the Pleasantdale section of suburban West Orange. This family of restaurateurs took up the mantle of preserving and maintaining the rich history and beauty of the estate.
