September 11, 2023, will mark the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy. Every year, ceremonies, memorials, vigils, and other events are held to remember those who lost their lives that day. From Montclair to Verona, we have gathered a list of events happening in honor of 9/11. Read on for a roundup of 9/11-related events happening right here in Essex County for 2023.
9/11 National Day of Service | 1 Normal Avenue, Montclair
September 9th | 7:30AM – 3PM
Montclair State University hosts its annual National Day of Service in honor of 9/11. There are 30 different service sites to choose and volunteer in for a good cause for students, faculty, alumni, and local residents.

9/11 Ceremony | Eagle Rock Avenue, West Orange
September 11th | 8AM
Eagle Rock Reservation will host its annual remembrance ceremony. There will be a brief program including a flag-raising and a wreath placing at the memorial located inside Eagle Rock Reservation. Guests can attend the ceremony in person or can be viewed via a livestream here.
9/11 Commemoration Ceremony | 141 Gould Avenue, North Caldwell

North Caldwell is holding a ceremony in front of Borough Hall in North Caldwell. The event is expected to be held outside with North Caldwell’s Mayor Raymond and the Borough Council participating. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved inside Borough Hall.
9/11 Remembrance | 600 Bloomfield Avenue, Verona
September 11th | 8:45AM – 9:45AM
To honor 9/11, a morning ceremony in Verona will be held. The ceremony is set to take place in Verona’s Civic Center. There is a special 9/11 monument located at the Civic Center to honor the victims of the 9/11 attack.
Nutley’s 9/11 Ceremony | 1 Kennedy Drive, Nutley
September 11th | 10AM
Residents are invited to attend the ceremony to join town officials, victims’ families + friends, and clergy members at the 9/11 memorial located in front of Township Hall for a memorial ceremony. Three Nutley residents will be honored, Lieutenant Robert Cirri, Frank LaLama, and Dorota Kopiscko who lost their lives on 9/11.
9/11 Remembrance Ceremony | Franklin Avenue + Chestnut Street, Belleville
September 11th | 11AM
Belleville’s annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony will take place at the 9/11 Park, located at the corner of Franklin Avenue + Chestnut Streets. The Municipal Council, Belleville’s Fire + Police Departments, and Mayor Michael Melham will be in attendance for the morning service.

9/11 Ceremony of Remembrance | Robert H. Harp Drive, Livingston
September 11th | 6:30PM
Livingston will hold an afternoon ceremony to honor the seven residents lost on 9/11. The ceremony will be held at 6:30PM, rain or shine, at the 9/11 Living Memorial Garden. Parking is available at St. Philomena’s Church, 386 South Livingston Avenue.
