Sometimes running on the treadmill or lifting weights in the gym can get monotonous and a more fun way of working out is needed. Or maybe you’re looking to meet new friends who share an interest in sports. Either way, there are some great opportunities for women to join intramural sports leagues on coed teams around Northern NJ. It can be hard to find, since many leagues are male-only — especially in the Essex County area — but we’ve done the research and these are worth the trip to Hudson County + beyond. Whether you’re searching for a soccer team, a softball league, a place to play volleyball, or something else, we’ve got you covered. Read on for a list of adult intramural sports leagues that accept women around Northern NJ.

If you know of any other coed sports leagues for adults, send us a note at hello@themontclairgirl.com.

HASL | Hoboken

For any soccer lovers, this is the league for you. The Hoboken Adult Soccer League (HASL for short) is a soccer league in Hoboken that has coed teams, along with male-only leagues. According to the rules, there must be at least 2 women on the field for teams that are coed. There are also leagues for different experience levels from beginner and up, and games are played at Frank Sinatra Park or 1600 Park Avenue. Fees for this league start at $175 per season.

Hive Athletic | Hoboken

Sports games can get intense, but with Hive Athletic, there’s a “ very strict NO A$$H*LES policy” according to the website. Depending on which sport you join, they have various locations between Jersey City and Weehawken (most of which are in Hoboken). Hive Athletic features dodgeball, volleyball, soccer, pickleball, basketball, football, kickball, softball, and corn hole. All of these leagues are coed, and there are even rules baked into games to ensure the women on the team get some playing time (like for two-hand touch football, a female has to be a primary quarterback or receiver every three plays). Fees start at $100 per season.

Hoboken Coed Softball League | Hoboken

Softball can be a great sport to try because the game can be slow enough to catch on quickly. While hitting the pitch may be hard for some, the inviting atmosphere makes it fun nonetheless. This league has rules to make sure women get a chance to play (no more than three men can bat in a row), so it’s fair for all players. The seasons are quite long and run from April to November, so there’s plenty of time to join for next season.

Jersey Club Sports (Powered by VOLO) | Morristown

Currently, about half of the leagues through Jersey Club Sports are coed leagues, with no women’s-only league. There are plenty of sports to choose from, including softball, flag football, soccer, and more. With the various sports being played in Morristown, it’s the perfect place to get a workout in during the game on various days of the week and then check out some great bars in the area after. Fees start at $95 for joining a league for a season.

NJ Coed Sports | Various Locations in Northern NJ

After humble beginnings in 2011, NJ Coed Sports grew from 31 people to more than 3,000 participants. There are many different sports to choose from including indoor volleyball, sand volleyball, basketball, and more. It’s great too because games happen during the week, as well as on the weekends so there is a good time for everyone who wants to join.

NJ Sports Community | Various Locations in Northern NJ

This is one of the few intramural sports leagues that have women-only leagues, in addition to male-only leagues and coed leagues. There are plenty of sports to choose from, from flag football to soccer, and even basketball, corn hole, and more. Each sport has a few options of teams playing on different days of the week in different areas from Clifton to Wayne. Fees start at $117 per season. Each registration comes with a t-shirt, as well as food and drink specials at sponsor bars.

Locations in Morristown, Montclair, and Paramus are a few locales to check out in NJ. Unless they note a cost on the website, these pickup ultimate frisbee games are free. Men and women both old and young can come to join a game of ultimate frisbee.

Zog Sports | Hoboken + Other Locations in the Area

Zog Sports has some male-only leagues and plenty of coed leagues as well. With Zog, participants can play corn hole, kickball, flag football, bowling, softball, and volleyball.
