About the Watchung Plaza Project

On May 23rd, 2025, Montclair Township began construction of the center park in Watchung Plaza in hopes of making the area more accessible to people with disabilities.

For the past three months, the work has included repaving and repairing brick pavers, adding concrete pads and pervious asphalt paving systems, and relocating or furnishing/installing park benches and picnic tables. The project also includes the overall restoration of the site, including landscaping and electrical improvements.

On August 13th, 11 weeks after construction kicked off, the township gave an update on the project, stating that a majority of the work had been completed. The plaza has now entered its next phase of construction, which includes “aesthetic and finishing touches,” a statement from the township reads. This includes the removal of the remaining temporary fencing, trimming of the new grass and trees, installation of new plantings, weeding, and other landscaping work.

“Although fencing has partially come down around the ongoing renovations at Watchung Plaza, the project is not yet complete and remains an active construction site,” the township says. Montclair anticipates that the project will be completed this coming September.

“When complete, the renewed Watchung Plaza Park will be a more welcoming and accessible space for our entire community,” the township says. “These updates will make it easier for everyone, including those with disabilities, to navigate the park.”
