Zaro’s is truly a family-owned and operated establishment, currently in its fourth generation. Take one look at the business’s Instagram page and you’ll see Zaros of all ages behind the counter, baking, or enjoying some favorite menu items. The family tradition harkens back to 1927 when patriarch Joseph Zaro arrived in the Bronx by way of Ellis Island.

According to the family, Joseph and his wife May “seized the opportunity to open one of the best bakeries in America” inspired by their Eastern European roots.

While Joseph crossed the Atlantic before opening his initial bakery, the new location will simply have to cross the Hudson. According to Newark Pulse, the official opening is slated for sometime this summer, though news surrounding a potential Zaro’s coming to the Shoppes on Broad development has been circulating since 2019. The spot is expected to serve all the classics, including Zaro’s iconic black and white cookies, hand-twisted pretzels, and bagels with lox.

If Broad Street is a bit out of your way, never fear. Zaro’s has additional locations across Manhattan and a storefront in the Bronx. The bakery often caters to commuters, with multiple shops within Grand Central Terminal, one shop at Laguardia Airport; two spaces at New York Penn Station, the aforementioned presence at Newark Penn Station; and one bakery at the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

According to the official website, the business is proud to report that 1.5 million people walk directly by a Zaro’s every day. A pastry or freshly-brewed coffee from the vendor can regularly become a part of that morning ritual.
