Launch Details
Misunderstood Whiskey officially released its new drink on October 10th, 2022, a few months after celebrating the brand’s five-year anniversary. It’s something that’s been in the works, though, for over two years.
“Our standalone Oat Nog concept has been in the works since 2020. However, we had to put the official production and launch on hold while we expanded national distribution for our core product, Misunderstood Ginger Spiced Whiskey,” JD Recobs and Chris Buglisi, founders of Misunderstood Whiskey, told The Montclair Girl.

“We love experimenting with unconventional cocktail combinations and have been incorporating dairy-free products into our cocktail program for a few years now.”
The process of releasing a product like this did come with challenges and achieving the flavor of a dairy-free product took “months to perfect.” But luckily, JD and Chris were able to make it work in time for the holidays.
So, how did the idea come about? The founders told MG, “We were also starting to favor alternative milks over traditional dairy in our own homes. To our surprise, we discovered that there were limited options for those who were dairy-free or vegan in the spirits category. We decided to change that.”
Enjoying the Oat Nog
Misunderstood Oat Nog is dairy-free, egg-free, gluten-free, and nut free. The founders’ goal was to create something that didn’t have all of these ingredients, yet was still “silky, creamy, and [had a] full-bodied flavor.”
The tasting notes include: nose — crème brûlée, vanilla, and nutmeg, taste — light and creamy with notes of bourbon and ginger snap cookies, and the finish — savory with notes of buttercream and baking spices.
Misunderstood Oat Nog is best served chilled or on the rocks. It also can be served with a splash of Misunderstood Ginger Spiced Whiskey for an extra kick. “We call that a Ginger Snap — and it’s delicious!”
The liqueur can also be made into an EspressOAT Martini, which is made with 1.5 oz vodka, tequila, or Misunderstood Ginger Spiced Whiskey, 1 oz Misunderstood Oat Nog, 1.5 oz espresso or cold brew, and 1 oz coffee liqueur. Or, the new drink can be mixed into 4 oz hot cocoa!
New Ideas
Misunderstood Whiskey initially launched in 2017. It was first sold in Hoboken, Jersey City, and Montclair before expanding to many states across the country. The founders hope for the brand to be distributed to 24 states by the end of this year.

“We could write a book with all of the ideas (good and bad!) we’ve had over the years. We’re always keeping an eye out for durable trends,” JD and Chris shared. “We couldn’t be more excited to be America’s First dairy-free hard Oat Nog. This release has made a lot of people happy and we’re thrilled to be a part of the holiday cheer.”
Each bottle is 28 proof and 14% alcohol. The limited release is sold for $29.99 and can be purchased through Misunderstood Whiskey’s website or can be ordered through Drizly.
