About The Announcement

The exciting news of Legacy Coffee’s future plans were posted on Instagram earlier this month. The post read, “We have some big news! We are bringing awesome coffee back to the neighborhood this September! We will be introducing our new mobile coffee shop at Mountainside Medical Center and opening up our calendar for events. New shop, new snacks, new drinks but same neighborhood, same vibe and we are bringing back all your faves. We can’t wait to see you all again soon!”

This was the first time the MacLeods posted for quite some time. There’s been no social media activity since November 2020. When the news of the mobile shop then came out seven months later, fans of the brand were quick to express their excitement.

One commenter wrote, “Can’t wait until September… great spot for all the medical people and patients coming and going to doctors,” while another wrote, “Happy to have the best coffee back in the neighborhood.”

How Legacy Evolved

Legacy Coffee’s soon-to-come mobile shop will mark its two-year anniversary since becoming a staple in Montclair. The original Legacy, which was located at 41 Glenridge Avenue, officially opened in September 2019. When the pandemic hit, Legacy switched to take out only in mid-March. Shortly after, they launched an online store.

“You can order merch and join our monthly coffee subscription. Free local delivery and new products added daily. Without most of our usual business, we are working on new models to keep us going. We appreciate all of your support!” they posted on Instagram at the time.

Legacy was then forced to close at the end of March due to COVID-19. However, the owners pushed to keep the business still thriving by continuing the online sales, local delivery, and coffee of the month memberships.

Workers from the small business supported the community by providing healthcare workers at Mountainside Medical Center with coffee jugs containing a boost of energy. “We are keeping everybody caffeinated!” they wrote after donating over 800 cups of coffee in 48 hours.

In June 2020, Legacy reopened to the public. A few months later, in August 2020, Legacy announced they would be closing after Labor Day. “Next weekend marks our one-year anniversary of opening this amazing shop. I am so grateful for all of our loyal and loving customers and the incredible year we have spent here. COVID-19 hit us six months in, completely destroying our ability to provide what we set out to provide: a social space,” the post read.

“While we applaud the ingenuity of other businesses pivoting to adapt to this new world, Legacy Coffee just isn’t the same when we can’t hang out together. It’s harder than ever to provide great customer service and the Legacy Coffee experience in person. We will continue our online shop, including our Cold Brew and Coffee Bean Subscription programs while we work on steps towards another physical location sometime down the line. We will also continue local delivery of these items so please keep ordering at legacycoffeenj.com.”

Fast-forward to the present time, Legacy Coffee will be back in September, in the form of a mobile truck parked outside the Mountainside Medical Center.

More About Legacy Coffee

All Legacy’s followers have learned so far is that they will still be serving up the usual coffee selection of espresso, cappuccino, latte, mocha, and tea. While Montclair residents wait to learn more details of the “new shop, new snacks, [and] new drinks” that’s to come, Montclair Girl can provide our readers with what Legacy Coffee sold in the past.

The shop that drew customers into the store with its vibrant colored outdoor seating featured specialty items. These included handcrafted cold brew, their signature butterfly pea flower lemonade, fresh homemade baked goods, and homemade flavor syrups. Regulars also enjoyed being decked out with Legacy’s merchandise such as t-shirts, baseball caps, notebooks, and stickers.

In addition, Legacy sold coffee beans and bags from other brands such as Booskerdoo, Black and White Roasters, Máquina Coffee Roasters, and Brandywine Coffee Roasters. They also sold books, coffee mugs, candles, and little odds and ends like pins and magnets.

We can’t wait to see Legacy Coffee’s new rebranded mobile shop! While the website, which is viewable by clicking this link, is currently being renovated, regulars and residents can stay up-to-date by following them on Instagram here.
