Laser Tag, dart teams, pool halls, and indoor golf. Essex County is full of carefree fun options, and the most universal pastime for all ages may be the quintessential arcade. Arcades are a multigenerational outlet, attracting families, teens, and adults alike. The new Hometown Arcade, located at 85 Washington Street in Bloomfield, mixes the past, present, and future of arcades in an inviting space that welcomes everyone. Read on to learn more about this unique arcade and its owner, Aash Bansal.
About the Founder
Aash Bansel grew up in Westfield, New Jersey. As a child, he loved video games and had a passion for tinkering. He loved to take things apart and rebuild them. Little did he know that these skills would become the building blocks to opening his own arcade. Years later, Aash graduated from Rutgers University and moved to New York City. There he worked in the Tech Industry and met his wife Natalie, who grew up in Montclair. The couple moved back to Montclair to be closer to family and raise their son.

Two years ago, Aash’s brother-in-law, Matt Snow, opened the first Hometown Arcade in Norwood, Massachusetts. Aash thoroughly enjoyed helping Matt get the arcade ready to open. He worked on the games and cherished the time he was spending with his family. Matt couldn’t help but notice how happy Aash was working on the arcade and how unhappy he was in his current career. He suggested Aash change directions and open an arcade of his own in New Jersey. Aash took these comments to heart and opened Hometown Arcade Bloomfield. Matt became an invaluable resource to Aash, and Aash’s father supported him every step of the way. This is truly a family affair, and the brothers-in-law like to call this a family franchise.
Hometown Arcade’s Mission
Aash envisioned parents playing their favorite childhood games with their children, so he designed the arcade to have large windows, bright lights, and high ceilings. He wanted the space to be inviting to families and to feel inclusive to all. The goal was to build a community space for all ages that exudes joyfulness. This community also includes the local businesses on Washington Street. Varitage Brew Works, located at 58 Washington Street was very helpful in guiding Aash through the ins and outs of the neighborhood, and Six Points Pizza, located at 57 Washington Street, has partnered with Aash to deliver pizzas to the arcade, where there is a designated area to eat and drink. The arcade is also in the process of obtaining a liquor license. Shortly, there will be a 21+ atmosphere after 7:30PM. A family can come with their kids during the day, and then return in the evening for a throwback date night.
Hometown Arcade has a collection of vintage video games, including favorite titles such as Donkey Kong, Frogger, and Asteroids. This Montclair Girl couldn’t pull herself away from Pacman and Space Invaders. There is also a vintage air hockey table, skee ball, and a gaming room.
Aash’s favorite all-time games are Street Fighter 2, The Simpsons Game, and The Ninja Turtles Game. He also has a passion for pinball machines, which is evident in the arcade. Aash’s favorite one to play is Stranger Things.
