About the Owner
Jackie Spiteri is the owner and founder of Colias Cafe. Originally from Malta, she moved to the States 35 years ago and has been living in Bloomfield, NJ for about 26 years. Jackie always knew she wanted to open a cafe.
Jackie has a unique background when it comes to experience in this industry. She originally wanted to open a cafe because she has such a passion for hosting. “Everytime I went to a cafe, I thought about how I would do it,” Jackie told The Montclair Girl. This passion manifested over time, and led Jackie to opening Colias Cafe in August of 2024, after being a stay-at-home mom for 24 years.

Jackies expresses two important factors when it comes to making Colia’s Cafe shine. “Customer service always comes first.” Jackie wants every person who enters Colia’s to enjoy their beverages, food, and time spent in the cafe. The second is that many of the ingredients are locally sourced. Jackie is also a holistic coach, so this is her take on meeting people halfway. From flour to coffee beans, Jackie has created a menu for everyone to enjoy with locally sourced, fresh ingredients.
In addition to creating the menu, Jackie also bakes the majority of breakfast pastries every morning. Her day begins around 5:30AM, when she’ll bake until opening the cafe at 7:30AM. From cookies to coffee cakes, Jackie bakes it all with the exception of her croissants; those are brought in from Le French Dad in Montclair.
Jackie connects with patrons in the cafe as often as she can. She wants them to feel like they’re at home. She mentioned the vibe she is trying to create for the cafe is deeply rooted in European cafe culture where people come, eat, drink, and relax. There is also outdoor seating where cafe patrons can grab a table and feel as though they’re having a coffee and their favorite breakfast pastry in someone’s backyard.
About the Space
The cafe sits on Broad Street down the block from Bloomfield’s Town Pub. Upon entering, there is a large coffee counter to place and receive orders. To patrons’ immediate right, there is a bar along the wall with about four chairs. This bar faces outside, making it a perfect spot to grab a cappuccino and gaze out the large window.
On the left side of the entry is a long hallway. It holds four bar-style tables with two stools at each. The back of the cafe also has wall displays with coffee beans, cups, tea boxes, + other accessories that are available for purchase.
The cafe has minimalist-style decor, vintage-style hanging lamps with warm lighting, and a hutch upon entry that holds coffee additions like sugars, honey, straws, water, glasses, napkins, + more. The final touch is Colias’ playlist. It holds cozy jams from Creedence Clearwater Revival to Fleetwood Mac. One of the baristas in the space has a background in music and curates playlists based on the vibe of the coffee shop on any given day.
