About the Owner

Blue Steel Pizza is owned by businessman and pizza chef Brian Costello. Blue Steel Pizza Company is not his first restaurant venture but is definitely one of his most unique. The kitchen is led by Executive Chef Lawrence Talis and, together, these two have created an original concept.

From the art to the small plates, to the style of pizza, to the speakeasy Rab-Bit Hole that can be found upstairs behind a hidden entrance (read more about Rab-Bit Hole here), Costello and Talis have brought much more than just a restaurant to the area.

The Atmosphere

Blue Steel Pizza Company is as interesting to look at as it is to eat there. The space’s lights are always kept low and, alongside the energetic music, give the restaurant a club-like feel without the dance floor.

The restaurant is spread across two floors. Downstairs, you will find mostly bar top seating with a few standard tables and a commanding blue backlit bar that ties the vibe together.

Toward the back of the restaurant on the first floor, you can find the fire-fueled pizza oven pumping out delicious pizza. Being able to see the oven while pizzas are being slung in is not only fun to watch but makes you feel a part of the experience of your dinner.

Upstairs, there are more tables and some additional couch seating. The walls are clad with fascinating art including brightly colored portraits of Jersey-native Frank Sinatra. Collectively, the entire restaurant is eye-catching and fun.

The Menu

One look at the menu and you will see more cuisines than you’ve likely seen on most menus. Currently, it includes but is not limited to Asian, American, Caribbean, and Italian. The best way to describe the cuisine is “global”, and the menu has something for every palate and craving.

While we are not lacking in pizzerias in the area, What sets Blue Steel apart is that it serves Detroit-style pizza. Detroit-style pizza is different from New York or wood-fired pizza in that it is deep-dish and the sauce is put on after the cheese. The crust is thick and crispy, and it’s a much saucier pie.

One of the standouts on Blue Steel’s pizza menu is the eggplant pizza. It’s a great combination of sweet, savory, creamy, crunchy, and earthy. The eggplant gives it a somewhat smoky flavor which is complimented well by the Calabrian chili honey that takes this pizza to the next level. We recommend ordering multiple pizzas for the table – you won’t regret it!

Blue Steel’s small plates menu is great for a date night and sharing. Our favorite on the menu was the “cacio e pepe” mazemen, which perfectly tied together Asian and Italian cuisine. The bacon was thick and flavorful and the noodles held onto the sauce perfectly. The pop of sweet Jersey corn rounded out the dish, making it very well-balanced.

The oven-roasted summer peppers are also a great summer dish to enjoy. The zucchini is kept raw and sliced very thin, freshening up the dish, and the roasted peppers add a nice contrast. The croutons soaked up all the vinegar and, together with the drizzled with hot honey, hit all of the taste bud marks.
