After six weeks of fun with our new international friends, the 2026 World Cup is coming to an end. The tournament’s final match will be played on Sunday, July 19th at New York New Jersey Stadium here in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Semifinal games on July 14th (France vs. Spain, playing in Dallas) and July 15th (Argentina vs. England, playing in Atlanta) will determine which teams play in the final match.  Read on for everything you need to know about the World Cup final match on July 19th in East Rutherford, NJ.

World Cup Recap

This year’s World Cup has been full of nail-biters, with so many close games and underdog stories to follow. Although Team USA suffered an underwhelming exit in the Round of 16 match, fans have been satisfied with the event’s narratives to follow.

The two quarterfinals matches include France vs. Spain on Tuesday, July 14th, and England vs. Argentina on Wednesday, July 15th. France and Spain are both considered the two best teams remaining by pundits – a team has yet to score a point against France in the tournament, and Spain has convincingly won its three games by a 6-1 total score.

However, as they face each other in the quarterfinals, only one will get to see the final stage. It’s also worth considering that upsets from England and Argentina are not impossible, especially considering the all-time great Lionel Messi plays for the latter.

The 2026 World Cup final will take place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford on Sunday, July 19th (after a lineup of other matches happening at the NJ stadium). Between the transit concerns and local celebrations, the event has already altered the typical summer dynamic here in New Jersey, but the introduction of a halftime show is new and major for all viewers of the event.

On Thursday, May 14th, organizers announced that this year’s World Cup will feature the first final halftime show in World Cup history, resembling the American Super Bowl tradition of halftime shows each year. The World Cup will feature major artists on stage, with this year’s lineup including Justin Bieber, Shakira, Madonna, and the K-pop band BTS.

According to organizers, the World Cup halftime show will support the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, an initiative working to raise $100 million USD to promote access to education and soccer opportunities for children around the world. “Throughout the tournament, [$1 USD] from every ticket sold to FIFA World Cup 2026 matches will be donated to the Fund,” the FIFA World Cup team announced on Instagram.

While a final halftime show is new for the World Cup, FIFA has experimented with similar concepts for other events. The FIFA Club World Cup, a lower-scale event that was also at MetLife Stadium in 2025, featured a halftime show with Doja Cat, Tems, and J Balvin. The stage was woven into the stands, and the upcoming 2026 Final halftime show may adopt a similar design.

The halftime show will be a spectacle for many viewers, including fans familiar with the artists — but some soccer purists have concerns about its effect on game quality. Halftimes are often seen as a sacred time dedicated to rest and game-planning for players and coaching staffs, something a halftime show could disrupt.

Local Life Fun Facts

Here are some fun facts to know about the World Cup in New Jersey:

Transit + Weather Updates

Summer outdoor sports always have weather as a challenge, and the World Cup is no different. Observers have been monitoring the heat and humidity levels since before the tournament even began, and several heat waves during the tournament have drawn attention to the health risks of outdoor athletic activities.

Forecasters are already calling for a heat advisory in the area during the days leading up to the final match. There is also rain in the forecast for the day of the game, as of this writing. Most games will continue despite rainfall, but play may be halted based on the presence of lightning in the vicinity. Per Reuters, tournament organizers must comply with local lightning safety regulations. “Under U.S. protocols, play is suspended immediately if lightning is detected within an eight-mile (13-km) radius of a stadium and can only resume after 30 minutes have passed without a further strike. Any new lightning detection resets the countdown, meaning delays can stretch for several hours if thunderstorms persist.”

Much has been made of the challenges of getting to and from the stadium. The concept of walking to the stadium has been discussed to a disturbing level: despite continual reminders not to do this, several international visitors were spotted walking to the stadium.

While NJ Transit is the primary transportation provider for game days, it also has limited service on game days.  According to the NJ Transit website, “starting four hours before kickoff, NJ TRANSIT rail service between Penn Station New York and Secaucus Junction will be limited to FIFA World Cup 2026 ticket holders.” Tickets must be purchased in advance on NJ Transit’s app.

NJ Transit Bus

Those who use Secaucus-area bus connections should be aware that select routes will operate on a different schedule during  World Cup match days. According to the NJ Transit website:

“During the World Cup 26 match days, Bus Routes 2, 78, 124, 129, and 329 will operate from a temporary pick-up and drop-off location. The location will be on the corner of Castle Road + Paul Amico Way, which is adjacent to Secaucus Junction Station. Route 2, 78, and 329 local buses to and from Secaucus Junction, and Route 124 and 129 buses between Port Authority Bus Terminal and Secaucus Junction will operate on their regular schedule to and from this temporary location.”

Road Traffic

Road traffic will be dense around MetLife Stadium during match days, with the worst windows being 2-4 hours before and after matches. According to MetLife Stadium’s directions, affected roads will include:

  • Route 3
  • Route 120
  • The NJ Turnpike western spur
  • Meadowlands Parkway

There will also be no general spectator parking available at MetLife Stadium on game days, meaning those visiting the area should look to take a shuttle, public transit, or rideshare.

Rideshare + Drop-Offs

Rideshare, which includes services such as Uber and Lyft, will be available around MetLife Stadium on game days, but is expected to be limited and regulated to minimize traffic and congestion. According to the World Cup 2026 website, drop-offs on Stadium property will not be allowed, and rideshare service will be at a designated drop-off location at Meadowlands Racing + Entertainment.
