If locals take a walk around Montclair's suburban streets this time of year, they'll find yards filled with all kinds of holiday decorations, from colorful lights to large nativity scenes. Out of all the decorated neighborhoods, there's one specific area Montclairians must visit, Warren Place. Giant inflatable snowmen have turned this street into quite a spectacle. The Snowman Story

Warren Place is a quiet residential neighborhood in Montclair that at any other time of the year wouldn't necessarily stand out. This holiday season, though, residents have filled their front yards with inflatable snowmen that tower as high as some of the houses.

We stumbled upon this scene earlier this season and decided to do some digging. According to The Montclair Local, this snowman phenomenon started in December 2023, when Montclair resident Ann McCarthy purchased the decorations for herself and her neighbor, Amy Kopp, to add some holiday cheer to the community. Once she bought the 20-foot snowmen, word spread around the street. Within 24 hours, 14 more snowmen were placed on the front yards of Warren Place. “We were all outside on our lawns, helping each other," Amy told The Montclair Local. "We spent hours working on our snowmen. It was just so much fun."

To get even more neighbors involved, Ann told her community that she would donate to The Montclair Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works to preserve Van Vleck House & Gardens, for every snowman that was put up. This led to even more decorations popping up in the surrounding streets, including Stonebridge Road, Orange Road, and South Mountain Avenue.

What started as a fun community initiative has turned into a shared tradition. This year, snowmen are crawling all over Montclair residential areas, with Warren Place continuing to be the highlight.
