Montclair has become quite the food + drink destination, especially with the opening of all the new restaurants, bakeries, and more this past summer. Along with a longtime MTC favorite is expanding in a familiar way. Paper Plane Coffee Co. is reopening its original location at 194 Claremont Avenue in Montclair, after two years of renovations. Read on for what to know about Paper Plane’s new (old) spot in Montclair, New Jersey.

The Details
Paper Plane Coffee Co.’s first Montclair locale at 194 Claremont Avenue opened in 2019 and served the community with coffee drinks, pastries, and more throughout the pandemic. In 2023, the Paper Plane team opened another shop next door at 61 North Fullerton Avenue, which is best known today for its on-the-nose airplane decor. Shortly after, the coffee spot closed its Claremont Avenue site for remodeling, and for the past two years, it has remained closed — until now.

Paper Plane recently took to social media to announce the reopening of its original location. “After only two years (which, in construction years, is practically overnight), we’re finally opening our remodeled space at 194 Claremont to the public. Yes, it’s real. Yes, it took forever. No, we don’t want to talk about it,” the post said.

The two locations are now connected to each other. The new (old) spot, which boasts a classy and artsy vibe, will serve as a rental space for private events, meetings, get-togethers, specialty coffee classes, tastings, and more during the week. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, though, the space will be open to the public for extra seating and online ordering.

The Claremont Avenue storefront will open to the public on September 9th. There won’t be online ordering on that date, but patrons are encouraged to check out the space, take advantage of the extra seating, and try out its photo booth. September 12th will be the first day of online ordering.
Paper Plane will also host an author event on September 12th. At 10AM and 3PM, little ones and their families can listen in on a reading of the children’s book Slothee Wants Coffee.

Paper Plane Coffee Co. has been a Montclair staple for the past six years, but prior to that, it was located in Brooklyn. Founded by Jonathan Echeverry in 2015, the legacy of this java spot stems back to approximately 150 years ago in Santuario, Colombia, when Jonathan’s great-great-grandfather began what would become generations of coffee growers in the Risaralda region.

Specializing in home-roasted specialty coffee selected from fair green beans with eco-friendly practices, Paper Plane serves creative innovations like a Mexican-style coffee soda, a strawberry espresso drink made with pop rocks, and more. The menu also includes classic coffee drinks like cold brews, pour-overs, and more.
Soon, Paper Plane will have a total of three locations in Essex County, as it’s gearing up to open a Maplewood site at 145 Dunnell Road. The opening timeframe of this spot is unknown as of this writing. Read about this soon-to-be outpost here.
