If there’s one thing Essex County does right, it’s bagels. In the spirit of continuing that tradition, Montclair is welcoming a brand new bagel shop. For the past few months, Harvey’s Handrolled Bagels has operated as a weekend pop-up shop in the bakery section of Walnut Street Kitchen. Now, the brand has a storefront of its own at the same location, 98 Walnut Street in Montclair, and is officially open for business, per a press release. Bagel lovers can expect a wide variety of flavors + breakfast sandwiches. Read on for more about this new bagel shop.

Origins

During the pandemic lockdown, Matt Harvey — as many of us did — spent much of his newfound free time rediscovering old passions. Chief among these passions was bagel making, a science that few, if any, can master. With his background in biology and chemistry — which he studied at Rutgers University — Matt was able to perfect this science, producing a bagel that was simultaneously light, doughy, and decadent.

At this time, Matt was still working his corporate medical sales job, and he first started selling his bagels to friends and family. All proceeds were donated to the Community Food Bank of NJ. When the feedback for his breakfast treats was overwhelmingly positive, he began collaborating with Walnut Street Kitchen, operating as a pop-up shop on the weekends. Now, he’s quit his 9-5 and has taken his business full-time.

What to Expect

Harvey’s Hand Rolled bagels is still located at 98 Walnut Street in Montclair, but the new storefront is now independent from Walnut Street Kitchen. Loyal patrons can expect the same unconventional breakfast sandwiches they love. Some of these menu items include: ‘The Cafone,’ a bagel sandwiching fried eggs, charred long shots, + mozzarella, as well as ‘The Corner Store,’ an ode to local business that features crispy apple-smoked bacon, fried eggs, cheddar, and scallion cream cheese. It also offers Cozz Coffee.

Harvey’s reimagines classic sandwiches to elevate them with restaurant-grade ingredients and unique flavor pairings. A fully-functioning storefront allows Matt and other in-house chefs to continue pushing these bagel boundaries and exploring new flavor frontiers.

Matt is also maintaining his philanthropic values with the new storefront. All purchases of the house-made hot sauce, the Good Times OG Mango Rojo, are donated to the non-profit Good Times.

Harvey’s Hand Rolled Bagels is open Tuesday – Sunday from 7AM-2PM. It is not open on Mondays. New Jerseyans from all over are encouraged to stop by and explore one (or multiple) of its many bagel variations.
