Don’t Tell Comedy: New Jersey’s Secret Comedy Show

Only cranky people hate to laugh.

Imagine this: you pay $25 for a ticket to a comedy show. You don’t know who is performing, much less headlining. You don’t even know where you will go. All you know is a town near your zipcode, a date, and a time. Then, the morning of the show, an email lands in your inbox with the secret address. Suddenly, you’re slipping off your shoes to sit in a folding chair inside a dojo in Maplewood and laughing until you cry at a lineup of comics (most from the city) who are giving you the best show of their careers. Sure, one has played Madison Square Garden, and another has been on The Daily Show, but tonight? They’re cracking jokes for you, in New Jersey, in a dojo.

This is the magic of Don’t Tell Comedy. And once you’ve experienced it, you’ll see why it’s our go-to comedy club. Read on for what to expect, why we love it, and how it’s shaking up the comedy scene right here in the Garden State.

What is Don’t Tell Comedy?

Don’t Tell Comedy is a nationwide underground comedy movement, with secret shows happening in unexpected places across the U.S. It’s comedy stripped down to its essentials just the way it was meant to be. A mic, a comic, and an expectant audience. No drink minimum. No overpriced nachos. Sometimes you can even BYOB. The vibe is intimate, low-key, and fun.

How It Works

Tickets can be purchased directly through the Don’t Tell Comedy website. Shows usually sell out quickly, especially in North Jersey towns like Montclair and Maplewood as well as the shore, so it’s best to book early once dates drop. You can browse by city, pick your date, and snag tickets before the secret location is revealed. At 8AM the day of the show, you get the address. The venue could be anywhere: a coffeeshop, a barbershop, someone’s backyard, or yes, even a dojo.

What to Expect

Every show is a little different, and you won’t know the lineup until you’re there. But you can count on seeing between four to seven comics. Some are brand new, some are up-and-coming, and others have Netflix specials, Comedy Central credits, or Colbert appearances. We’ve seen comics testing out new material from a tiny notepad, and others fine-tuning material they later took on tour.

The settings are usually intimate (they book shows wherever small businesses or people offer them space), so instead of feeling lost in a crowd, you’re right there with the comedians, close enough to catch every expression and off-the-cuff moment. But be warned, it’s also easier to find yourself in the line of fire with comedians who like to do crowd work. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpolished in the best kind of way, and the energy feels spontaneous and fresh. And because you don’t know the lineup until the comic is literally standing in front of you, every show carries an extra layer of surprise.

Why We Love It

We are pretty spoiled with a lot of great comedy options, especially living so close to the city. But with clubs that require two-drink minimums (on top of tickets to the show, and snacks, and long lines) to massive stadium shows where you’re watching your favorite comic on a screen, Don’t Tell Comedy feels refreshingly different. Ticket prices (in the $20-$40 range) come with the added perk that there’s no need to trek into the city. The surprise element of not knowing the lineup ahead of time keeps the night exciting, and the intimate settings mean you get a personal connection with the comics that you just can’t replicate in bigger venues. All of this adds up to a night out that feels both special and accessible, and why it’s become our go-to spot for comedy.

Insider Tips

If you want to make the most of the experience, there are a few things worth knowing. Signing up for the Don’t Tell Comedy newsletter is the easiest way to stay in the loop since new shows are added frequently and often sell out quickly. Some venues allow BYOB, so checking the policy beforehand means you can bring along a bottle of wine or a few beers to share. We brought a whole pizza once. Arriving a little early is always smart, as seating is first-come, first-served. And finally, go in with an open mind. Part of the fun is discovering new comics you might never have heard of before and watching them try out fresh material you won’t find online. Oh, and if you do like one of the comics, they usually let you know what their Instagram handle is so you can follow them (or Venmo them a tip).

In a world where you can look up every comic before you buy a ticket and already know half their set from TikTok and YouTube, Don’t Tell Comedy gives us that rare gift of surprise. It’s affordable, fun, stress-free, and you never know when you’ll be watching the next big name in comedy. But you will definitely remember that punchline that you heard first in a dojo in Maplewood.
