The small-batch charcuterie known as Butler + the Board Charcuterie, from Chef Jeff Butler, has gone from an online shop to an in-person outpost located at 103 Forest Street in Montclair. The shop has been under construction over the summer but Chef Butler is ready to open its doors in two weeks.

Born and raised in New Jersey, Jeff Butler is a classically trained chef and has worked at some of NYC’s top restaurants including Daniel, Esca, Dani, and Lupa for more than 10 years. He is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. For almost ten years, he taught the professional culinary, Italian, and Farm to Table programs at the French Culinary Institute in NYC. In 2019, Jeff was inducted into the esteemed Académie Culinaire de France.

Chef Butler specializes in small-batch charcuteries such as sausages, pâtés, and cold cuts. “Classics made modern,” seems to be the motto at the shop.
Many of the charcuterie boards available are pre-designed to help customers curate the best selection of meats and fruits. There is also a customizable option for those who know exactly what they want on their boards. Each one tells a different story at this shop, and all are made fresh to order.

The shop’s Instagram page displays the variations of boards. For example, there is the Country Pâté Picnic; the tasting board that pairs with certain wines, suggested by Chef Butler to maximize the experience; and the French/Spanish picnic spread that features Foie Gras Terrine and Salame Picante Cotto.

Patrons can also pick up fresh sandwiches: the bread is sourced from Montclair Bread Co. with the meats sourced in-house. The Bánh Mì was created with house-made chicken liver pate, cottage ham, and pickled vegetables on a demi-baguette.

Butler + the Board Charcuterie also specializes in sausages. From creations like the chicken and shiitake mushroom dumpling sausage to “cheddarwurst” to smoked provolone sausage, the shop offers unique takes on the classic meat.
