Chickpeas, olive oil, tahini, salt, and pepper – hummus is a beloved dish that deserves a celebration every day. But on May 13th, International Hummus Day, we’re taking a closer look at the basic recipe that’s high in protein and fiber — as well as naturally dairy- and nut-free. There are plenty of restaurants in the Montclair area that have this spread as part of a sandwich, served as a dip for veggies or chips, or served in other unique ways. Keep reading for some of our favorite hummus spots and menu items in the Montclair area.

Chickpeas served with sesame sauce, lemon juice, and olive oil – the cold appetizer at Antika Grill is incredibly flavorful. If you haven’t ever tried it, we seriously recommend you do. This spot has hummus, babaganoush, falafel, and more. Beyond Pita is an Essex County staple for all types of Mediterranean food. Everything on the menu is served fresh and consistent every time patrons make a trip in. Not only do we recommend the hummus – but the chicken and beef shawarmas should also be part of your order.

The gastropub in Upper Montclair not only serves up specialty cocktails with an extensive beer and wine list – it’s also a perfect spot for a night out with friends or a cozy date night. During your night out, a highlight of the meal will definitely be the hummus appetizer. It comes with grilled pita, crudités, and olive tapenade to make for a special dish for anyone at the table.

Gabriella’s Place Lebanese Cuisine | 177 Franklin Avenue, Nutley

Gabriella’s is a charming Lebanese place that is a hidden gem in North Jersey. Here, diners will find authentic food that will keep them coming back to the area. The hummus is no exception — enhanced with tahini, lemon juice, and topped with olive oil – it’s the perfect starter to any meal at Gabriella’s. But don’t worry, hummus is also served with some of the entrées if you’re just selecting one item on the menu.

Le Souk’s menu is A blend of Middle Eastern cuisines from Syria, Morocco, and Turkey and has an array of plant-based dishes. The hummus and falafel are as traditional as it gets. We recommend making a visit to this Montclair gem, as the environment, music, and food are a triple threat.

Newer to the area, Manouche + Co. has already made a name for itself locally with exceptional service and great flatbreads, falafel, kabobs, shawarma, gyros, and more. It boasts a blend of Mediterranean and Lebanese cuisines. The homemade hummus and labneh are especially noteworthy here.

MishMish Cafe | 631 1/2 Valley Road, Montclair

At this neighborhood spot, — which takes ingredients from across the Mediterranean — the menu offers classic and authentic Israeli comfort food. While there are a plethora of dishes that are served with the delicious hummus offered at MishMish,  the Curried Tofu Bowl is a star on the menu. Served with local mushrooms and broccoli over hummus, it’s an ideal lunch or dinner option in the area.

The Bosphorus is a Turkish and Mediterranean restaurant. This Essex County spot is known for its delicious hummus, which is served with fresh garlic, tahini, sesame paste, lemon, and olive oil. The spot is family-owned and showcases a comfortable, family-friendly atmosphere.

Lebanese cuisine is served in a chic bistro atmosphere, and the menu at Uncle Momo is unique and unforgettable. From mezzes and shawarmas, to traditional Levantine delicacies and French bistro classics,  this local spot is one-of-a-kind.
