The American Stroke Association, part of the American Heart Association, is hosting CycleNation to raise awareness about strokes, with one of the nation’s biggest mortality rates, which can also lead to disability. The team at Montclair Girl is also a proud partner of the American Heart Association, and we’re thrilled to be spreading awareness about this significant health threat. Read on to learn more about the CycleNation event, how you can be involved and spread awareness, and the organization’s fundraising goals.

About The Event

The CycleNation event will take place in May — also American Stroke Month — as a digital event. Participants are able to participate alone or in teams to cycle for stroke awareness and support an amazing cause.

Regan DeBenedetto, the director of specialty restaurants at Doherty Enterprises and a member of the NJ Tri-County CycleNation executive leadership team, shared his excitement about CycleNation gathering to raise awareness for strokes.

“CycleNation is a great activity because it brings everyone together to talk about stroke awareness. The more people who can recognize the symptoms of a stroke and the more we can prevent a recurrence of stroke, the healthier we’ll be,” Debenetto said.

On April 26th, participants were able to begin following their activity on the CycleNation app as well as use Strava, Apple Health, or Garmin. Some of the activities that can be done include stationary biking or riding their bike outdoors to help participants stay occupied and moving. The goal for this is for participants to ride as many miles as possible during the month of May, having a fundraising goal to show their contributions to the cause.

Physical activity such as cycling is extremely important for brain function, processing speed, and mental sharpness. Cycling also helps with the heart by strengthening heart muscles and reducing cholesterol.

Lyndsay Giger, an account executive at Express Scripts and another member of the NJ Tri-County CycleNation executive leadership team shared why she is participating with CycleNation for stroke awareness.

“I participate in the American Heart Association and CycleNation because I want people to see stroke survivors as warriors, not victims. My brother Danny is a 2-time stroke survivor, and he is the bravest and strongest person I know. He inspires me every day.” Giger shared.

American Stroke Association

The American Stroke Association’s goal is to eliminate the number of strokes and help lead individuals to live healthier lives. The American Stroke Association works together to limit the number of strokes and help those who have had strokes by funding innovative research, fighting for the public’s health, and providing lifesaving resources. Millions of volunteers and donors assist with health and stroke care for all.
