After years of serving shoppers in downtown Montclair, Urban Outfitters, a clothing, home decor, and lifestyle store located at 20 S Park Street, has permanently closed. Thursday, July 23rd, was the store’s final day in business, with shoppers reporting steep discounts on remaining merchandise. The closing sale came as Urban Outfitters’ parent company, Urban Outfitters Inc., recently announced record quarterly sales and earnings, with the Urban Outfitters brand posting positive sales growth, suggesting the closure was specific to the Montclair location rather than part of broader financial troubles. What Shoppers Can Expect
The Montclair Girl spoke directly with an Urban Outfitters team member who confirmed that Thursday, July 23rd was the store’s last day. According to a social media walkthrough shared by Montclair Now on the store’s final day, inventory has been picked over in some departments.

Fans of Urban Outfitters will still be able to get their fix without leaving the Garden State. According to its website, the brand operates six other stores in New Jersey, including locations in Cherry Hill, Edison, Paramus, Princeton, Red Bank, and Westfield.
Why Is the Urban Outfitters Montclair Store Closing?
Urban Outfitters has not publicly announced why its Montclair location is closing. Urban Outfitters Inc., the parent company of Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People, and Nuuly, still maintains a strong presence in Montclair with an Anthropologie location at 470 Bloomfield Avenue and a Free People store that opened at 469 Bloomfield Avenue earlier this month.
At this time, it is unknown what will take over the South Park Street space. URBN and the Montclair Center Business Improvement District did not respond to requests for comment.
Despite the closure, Urban Outfitters Inc. appears to be doing well financially. According to sales reports, the company reported a record first quarter in 2026, with total sales reaching nearly $1.5 billion, an 11.4% increase compared to the same time last year. The company also posted record net income of nearly $116 million.

Urban Outfitters’ retail saw comparable sales increase 5.6% during that time, including a 9.3% increase for the Urban Outfitters brand.
Broader Business Changes in Downtown Montclair
The closure of Urban Outfitters comes as part of a larger trend of business shifts in downtown Montclair. Last month, Culture Couture, an independent gift shop located at 53 Church Street, announced that it will close its brick-and-mortar storefront after 24 years in business.
23 other businesses are either now open or opening soon in the Montclair area, including new restaurants, wellness spots, and retail shops.
