Over the past few months, North Jersey has felt like something of an East Coast Hollywood, with countless movies + TV shows passing through the Garden State for different projects, and ample celebrity sightings to match. Now it’s time to roll out the red carpet because MTV’s highly-anticipated Video Music Awards (VMAs) are making their way back to Newark for a second consecutive year. The event will be held at Prudential Center on Tuesday, September 12th. Read on for what we know about the upcoming VMAs show in Newark, New Jersey, as well as how to attend.

The VMAs Return to the Garden State

Since its inception in 1984, the MTV Video Music Awards have almost always been held in either New York City or Los Angeles, with a few stints in Miami. Per TapInto, the highly-viewed award show first ventured to New Jersey in 2019, airing live from Newark’s very own Prudential Center. In 2022, the VMAs returned to The Rock for a second time — and as it turns out, North Jersey knows how to host an award show. The VMAs return to Prudential Center on Tuesday, September 12th for a third round of star-studded night of music videos + moon men statuettes.

The VMAs are “a night dedicated to the year’s biggest music videos,” which of course means appearances from notable names in the industry. Last year, Jack Harlow, LL Cool J, and Nicki Minaj co-hosted the show, with special guests Lizzo, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Bad Bunny performing, among others. This year’s entertainment includes Olivia Rodrigo, Nicki Minaj, and Lil Wayne, to name a few. Considering the releases since last year’s VMAs (Taylor Swift’s Midnights, and SZA’s SOS, to name a few), we suspect that Newark is in for a treat on Tuesday.

Per TapInto, the arrival of the VMAs in Newark comes with exciting opportunities for surrounding businesses. After last year’s event, “Newark’s hotels generated over $34 million in revenue in the third quarter of 2022, according to data provided by STR to the Greater Newark Convention and Visitors Bureau.” Redd’s Biergarten, known primarily as a Devil’s fan hangout, “was bought out by Paramount executives last year for the show.”

The VMAs are not invite-only — unlike other main-stage award shows, tickets can be purchased for the event via the Prudential Center directly or through second-party retailers like StubHub and SeatGeek. Tickets are limited, but there are still some available through various retailers.
