For those who have a passion for plants, Moss & More on Bellevue Avenue in Upper Montclair is a must-see — and smell — for a needed dose of earthiness. It’s more than a plant shop though — the spot also provides workshops and hosts parties of varying sizes. Moss & More has created a space for our community to gather, learn, and express our creative sides together. Now, the shop is officially expanding into a bigger space. Its new, redesigned flagship store is located at 42 Upper Montclair Plaza and will become the official home of the boutique, which was located at 246 Bellevue Avenue in Montclair. The team is celebrating the soft opening today, 9/6, and is holding a grand opening on September 9th. Read on to learn more about this beautiful Montclair shop.

About the Owner
Founded in November of 2018 by Amy South, Moss & More was the cultivation of 10 years of hard work and dreaming to make her vision a reality. Amy considers herself a true “Jersey Girl.” She has lived in New Jersey nearly her entire life and has resided in Montclair for the past 25 years with her husband, George, and their two children.
Amy says that Moss & More was her “destiny and the variety of experiences and paths my life has taken led me to this moment.” Realizing she was soon to be an empty-nester, she wanted to find a new outlet for her time and creativity.

Amy also wanted to connect with her community and, after a visit to the shop Terrain in Kennett Square, PA, she realized a plant shop was the answer. “I always loved gardening and interior design that sparks emotion which is always achieved with plants,” Amy notes.
With the support of her husband and children and the inspiration provided to her by all the local merchants in Montclair’s bustling retail community, the shop has become a reality.

The Shop
Amy describes the shop as a “botanical oasis.” It has a large assortment of pots and plants, giving patrons the ability to make something unique to their taste. The shop also offers specialty gift items such as candles by Lux Parsons, a local female-owned business, foraged fragrances, specialty books about houseplants, and honey from Bee Haven right in Glen Ridge.

Don’t have the biggest green thumb or keenest eye for design? Moss & More’s dedicated and talented staff can advise you on the best plant for you. They take into account the amount of light in the area you are placing the plant in, your lifestyle, if pets are in the home, etc., and can assemble arrangements and designs including terrariums and fun custom-made kokedamas (plants built into moss balls). Each plant also comes with a Moss & More plant card with information so you can keep your new plant baby alive and happy.

Moss & More also offers online shopping that started during Covid. Gifts can be shipped across the country, but not plants due to potential quality issues. The online shop includes candles, vases, gardening gear, and a monthly subscription to have floral arrangements sent via Studio Nectar.

Workshops + Events
Moss & More has had a separate studio space on Upper Montclair Plaza where it hosts workshops each month and where its large plants and vessels (shown by request) are housed. The Studio was opened in September of 2021. Amy says it was opened “in anticipation of people’s need and desire to for gathering while learning about positive energy after a long period of challenges. The beautiful space is also available for private events.” Now, this studio space is becoming the official new home of the boutique. As of September 6th, Moss & More is celebrating its soft opening at 42 Upper Montclair Plaza. The grand opening will be on September 9th.

There will still be workshops held at this space. The workshops focus on exploring creativity and spiritual health and wellness. Amy says, “The studio’s programming coordinator, Beth Taylor Hart, curates a collection of workshops led by the best and brightest visionaries and practitioners in the field of personal growth, well-being, and mindfulness.” Workshops include meditation classes, astrology readings, and terrarium and kokedamas-making.
The workshops are offered to all skill levels and its top-selling events include a medium event where Lee VanZyl connected people with their loved ones who passed on and an event with local astrologist, Crystal B. Moss & More is looking forward to its monthly Tarot Experiences where guests learn the basics of Tarot and receive a personal reading.
