The men’s basketball team at Montclair is having a historic run for the 2025-2026 season. For the first time in program history, the Montclair State University Men’s Basketball team ranks first in the country in a Division III poll. The Red Hawks are the only undefeated basketball team in Division III ball, but the season’s not over yet. Here’s what we know about the undefeated Montclair State University Men’s Basketball team and when they play their next game.
The Undefeated Red Hawks
The Montclair Men’s Basketball team is currently 22-0, the only undefeated team in Division III for the 2025-2026 season. The team is one of three remaining undefeated teams across all three divisions of college basketball. The other schools are Miami University Ohio, with a record of 24-0, and California State University, East Bay, with a record of 22-0.

According to the athletic department, the win streak is “the third-longest stretch in the history of the New Jersey Athletic Conference and the fifth-longest in the history of Montclair Athletics.” The men’s team is led by head coach Justin Potts, who has coached at Montclair for the past seven years. Coach Potts has led the team to 93 wins throughout his time as coach and has a .688 winning percentage, the best in program history.
The team reportedly received 11 first-place votes, which moved the Red Hawks up two spots from last week in the D3Hoops.com poll. It’s the first time in program history that the Montclair Men’s Basketball team has ranked number one in the country. The last time a Montclair team was ranked number one was Montclair’s Field Hockey team in 2013.

The Montclair team is also the first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) team to be ranked first in the history of the D3Hoops.com Top 25 poll. The other members of the NJAC include TCNJ, Rowan, Kean, Ramapo, Stockton, William Paterson, Rutgers-Camden, and Rutgers-Newark.

The Red Hawks are also the first NJAC team across all sports to rank number one since Rowan’s Men’s Outdoor Track + Field in 2022.
Montclair will face off against New Jersey City University on Wednesday, February 11, at 7PM at Panzer Athletic Center on Montclair State University’s campus. Check out the team’s full schedule online here.
