6 Maplewood + South Orange Boy Scouts Earn Eagle Awards

Six scouts from Maplewood’s Troop 5 have earned the prestigious Eagle Scout Award – the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America in an honor ceremony held on Saturday, November 30th, at Maplewood Middle School, surrounded by loved ones and community leaders.
Bloomfield Enhances Senior Programming with Oakeside Bloomfield Cultural Center
The Township of Bloomfield has launched new senior programming at the Oakeside Bloomfield Cultural Center, located at 240 Belleville Avenue. The programming is designed to create a welcoming space for seniors to connect and thrive. According to a press release from the township, no registration is required for seniors aged 60+ to participate Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch to share a meal with fellow seniors and friends. Spuntino Serving ‘Feast of Seven Fishes’ All Month Long
All month long, including Christmas Eve, Spuntino Wine Bar & Italian Tapas – located at 70 Kingsland Road in Clifton – will serve the Feast of Seven Fishes. Guests can expect dishes like Smoked Salmon Bruschetta, Crab Cake, Crispy Octopus, Garlic Shrimp, and more. Click here for more details.
Kreme + Krumbs Closes Montclair Location
After three years on Bloomfield Avenue, the artisanal ice cream shop, Kreme + Krumbs, closed its doors on Sunday, December 8th. Known for its one-of-a-kind sweet-tooth creations, the establishment is now fully moving its business to online. Kreme + Krumbs currently offers nationwide shipping, corporate gifting, and catering services.
Thieves Steal $1k+ in Meat From Montclair King’s Supermarket
The Montclair Police Department shared that management at King’s Supermarket on Valley Road reported a meat theft to officers on Wednesday, December 4th, according to Patch Montclair. Store personnel revealed they learned about the missing meat while conducting an audit, where thieves allegedly stole around $1,200 in meat from a grocery store in Montclair.
Governor Murphy Signs New Jersey Law Prohibiting Book Bans

Governor Phil Murphy signed into law the Freedom to Read Act – which prevents arbitrary book banning and protects the rights of students, parents, and communities to have free access to age-appropriate books and learning materials at schools and public libraries – on Wednesday, December 11th. The news release from the Governor’s office states that the legislation requires a system of review to address concerns over library materials and provides protections for library staff members against civil and criminal lawsuits related to cooperating with this law.
Bucky’s Pizza Opens First Storefront in Chatham

Bucky’s, a previously mobile pizza business, recently opened its first brick and mortar store at 465 Main Street in Chatham. Its hours are 4PM-8PM on Thursday and Friday, 12PM-8PM on Saturday, and 12PM-7PM on Sunday. Bucky’s specializes in one-hundred percent sourdough round + square whole pies.
Off-Duty Newark Sergeant Fatally Crashes Into Traffic Control Officer
An unnamed off-duty Newark police sergeant fatally struck a city traffic control officer who was monitoring traffic at 12:44AM on Thursday, December 12th, after an event at the Prudential Center. 53-year-old Newark Traffic Control Officer Jairo Rodriguez was pronounced dead less than one hour later after being taken to University Hospital. A spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said the off-duty city police sergeant – whose name is not being released due to the active investigation – remained at the scene, per NJ.com.
Spirit Airlines To Lay Off 60+ Newark-Based Employees
Spirit Airlines is laying off 68 employees in Newark after declaring bankruptcy amid a failed $3.8 billion merger bid with JetBlue as well as a result of the aftermath of an engine recall. Recent labor department filings show that the layoffs will reportedly include 34 pilots, 12 supply chain workers and 22 “tech ops workers.” These layoffs will go into effect between January 21st, 2025 and March 3rd, 2025, according to records from the New Jersey Department of Labor, per NorthJersey.com.
Out Montclair Asks for Donations Amid Financial Crisis

Out Montclair faces a “critical financial situation” right off the heels of the township earning the highest score possible from the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization in its fourth year. The organization has stated that it’s working to improve its strategic plan and restructure itself. An online fundraising page, “Save Out Montclair,” has a $120,000 goal and interested contributors can donate here.
New Mexican Restaurant Oso Felipe Opening in Montclair

A new Mexican restaurant called Oso Felipe is set to arrive in 2025 at 2 Erie Street in the former Richie Cecere spot. The restaurant keeps teasing social media followers with “opening soon” posts and photos of the authentic and contemporary Mexican cuisine it will serve, along with a liquor license.
New Cafe, Wood Legacy Cafe, Replacing Cafe Moso Space

Wood Legacy Cafe hosted its return to Montclair on Friday, December 13th, during the South End Tree Lighting. The space is located at 307 Orange Road in Montclair inside the former Cafe Moso space. Wood Legacy Cafe offers, according to its social media, “soulful eats” — and its next soft openings are on Saturday, December 21st and Saturday December 28th.
Montclair Welcoming New Greek Seafood Restuarant

Sardela, a Greek seafood restaurant, according to its social media, is set to open during the first few months of 2025 at the former Guerriero Gelato space at 571 Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair. The restaurant promises to serve authentic Greek seafood that “tells a story.” Sardela is named after the Greek word for sardine.
Regional Yemeni Coffee Chain, Qahwah House, to Open Montclair Location
Qahwah House – which already has a location in Clifton – will soon be bringing its coffee to Montclair. The Yemeni coffee chain houses a selection of premium coffee beans sourced from Yemen. It currently has 17 locations across the country.
