About the Race

The Montclair Mile kicks off and finishes at Montclair Brewery, located at 101 Walnut Street in downtown Montclair. Participants must check in there before launching into the race.

The course runs approximately ½ mile, starting at Depot Square and heading north. Runners will go smoothly for about 0.2 miles before making a left onto Sylvan Place, another left onto Forest Street, and a final left onto Walnut Street. Contestants will pass Montclair Brewery and then make one more left back onto Depot Square to complete the loop. To cover a full mile, runners will complete this ½ mile-long loop twice.

Unlike most races, participants in The Montclair Mile won’t leave the headquarters in one large group. Instead, runners will be divided into small sections, otherwise known as “heats”, that will start at different times throughout the night. According to the event hosts, this event is almost like a track meet, but instead of racing on a track, you’ll be competing on a closed-loop course. This setup allows everyone to be both a racer and a fan, cheering on fellow participants and supporting one another. MG loves the idea of fostering a supportive community event in the heart of downtown Montclair.

All participants will go home with a prize: a branded Montclair Mile pint glass + 1 drink ticket for a free drink at Montclair Brewery. MG pro-tip: participants who sign up before August 1st will receive a personalized race bib with their last name, which makes for a special memento from this event. The organizers will award “finished” ribbons to kids who participate in the kids’ dash, which they can pin on their tops and walk around with satisfaction.

The top three finishers in the men’s and women’s mile will receive cash prizes of $300, $200, and $100. The Montclair Mile also allows pups to be winners at this event, ensuring that our furry friends are never forgotten. In the Paws for Pavement race, the top three finishers will receive prizes as well.
