Nothing says ‘summer’ like a Fourth of July celebration. It’s been another busy week in Essex County, and we’ve got all the Montclair news to keep you up to date. Among the highlights: Nana’s Deli in Livingston has temporarily closed for the filming of a new Netflix movie; The Kush Connection gets Montclair Planning Board approval; and Newark Native Shaquille O’Neal will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Read on for all the news in Montclair and the surrounding Essex County towns for the week ending July 6th, 2025.

Nana’s Deli in Livingston Temporarily Closes for the Filming of New Netflix Movie

Nana’s Deli, a staple in Livingston and Jersey City, serving Jewish and Italian specialty dishes, is being used as the backdrop for a new Netflix film that has yet to be titled. Earlier in the week, the deli announced via Instagram that its Livingston location, at 127 South Livingston Avenue, would be closed from July 1st to July 9th for filming. After 100 Years in Operation, Immaculate Conception High School
Closes in Montclair

Catholic high school Immaculate Conception permanently closed its doors at 33 Cottage Place on June 30th, 2025, marking the end of its 100 years in Montclair. “Immaculate Conception High School has been a cherished institution for generations, providing a faith-based education that has shaped countless lives,” Superintendent of Catholic Schools Barbara Dolan said in a statement shared with News12 New Jersey. “As we move forward, our priority is to support our students and families in their transition while honoring the incredible legacy of ICHS.”


The Kush Connection Receives Montclair Planning Board Approval

The Kush Connection, a cannabis dispensary originally slated to open in 2024, received approval from the Montclair Planning Board on June 30th, 2025. The dispensary, which initially planned to be located across from Tierney’s Tavern at 135 Valley Road, will soon occupy the space at 665 Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair, a location previously home to the Montclair MotorCar dealership. Movie Produced by Adam Sandler Films at Montclair High School

Adam Sandler has been making his way around Montclair. Last week, he was spotted playing basketball at Rand Park, and this past week, his production company, Happy Madison Productions, was seen filming at Montclair High School’s outdoor amphitheater. The film, starring Adam Sandler’s daughter, Sadie Sandler, has yet to be named and is currently being referred to as the Untitled Roommates Project. The movie started filming on June 24th and will continue through mid-August. Click here for more.


Montclair District to Pay $90K in Settlement Over Student Injury
on School Grounds

The Montclair school district will pay a student $90,000 as part of a court-approved settlement following the filing of the student’s family’s lawsuit. The family claims that Montclair Public Schools allowed their, at the time, five-year-old son to be hit in the head with a brick on the Nishuane Elementary School playground on September 24th, 2021. According to Montclair Local, New York Life Insurance Company will pay the student $10,000 upon turning 18, another $10,000 at age 22, and $99,493.89 at age 26, totaling $ 119,493.89 in future payments. As part of the settlement, the claims against the school district have been dropped.


Union Workers Protest United Airlines Staffing Change at EWR

Workers affiliated with the national labor union 32BJ SEIU rallied at Newark Liberty International Airport on Thursday, June 3rd, protesting an upcoming staffing change administered by United Airlines. Beginning in October 2025, the airline will use United Ground Express instead of Prospect Cleaning Services for aircraft cleaning at EWR. 32BJ SEIU claims that this will affect 80% of full-time workers, changing their positions to part-time, ending workers’ employer-paid health care, and cutting union-provided immigration legal benefits, according to Patch.


Real Estate Firm to Renovate the Historic Griffith Building in Newark

The real estate firm MIG Real Estate has plans to revitalize the historic Griffith Building in Newark, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 24th, 1984. Located at 605-607 Broad Street, the property will feature luxury studio and one-bedroom rental apartments, a penthouse on the top floor, and 20,000 square feet of retail space, according to RealEstateNJ.


New Municipal Budget Aiming to Decrease 2025 Property Taxes Introduced in Fairfield

Fairfield’s 2025 municipal budget was introduced at the June 23rd Township Council meeting. According to TapInto, an average home valued at $530,788 will see a tax decrease of $476.43 for the 2025 tax year. This means that, if the budget is passed, the new tax rate would be $2.083.

On Thursday, June 26th, Newark’s Board of Education appointed a new member to fill the vacant seat left by former member Dawn Haynes, who abruptly resigned in June, according to NJ.com. Melissa Reed, a Newark Public Schools alumnus and active member in the community, will now serve a one-year term up for grabs in April 2026.

Basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, as per an announcement made on social media. The Newark native is now a member of the walk’s class of 2026.


Construction of Two-Building Residential Property Begins in Livingston

Construction has begun on a new 280-unit set of buildings located at 550 and 570 West Mount Pleasant Avenue in Livingston. Slated for completion in 2027, the project is being built on the site of the former Westminster Hotel and a neighboring former bank property. One of the buildings will be dedicated to older residents aged 55+, while the other will be open to residents of all ages, according to New York Yimby.


 Railroad Crossing on Pine Street in Montclair to Close for Replacement

The at-grade railroad crossing on Pine Street in Montclair will shut down for replacement on Wednesday, July 9th. The crossing is expected to reopen the following week on July 16th or July 17th. No vehicular traffic will be able to cross the tracks during this renovation, as announced by the Township of Montclair. Claremont Avenue and Glenridge Avenue will remain open for traffic and ambulances to and from the local hospital.


United Airlines Sees Improvement in On-Time Performance at EWR

United Airlines has seen significant improvements in on-time performance for its flights at Newark Liberty International Airport since the reopening of the now-renovated runway on June 2nd, 2025. “Almost 84% of Newark flights arrived within 14 minutes of schedule, better than any of the largest 15 airports in the U.S.,” the airline shared with The Montclair Girl. United has also signaled that it’s ready for the summer travel rush as it continues to work with the FAA to address the issues at EWR. This summer, the airline is expected to fly around 50 million people from June to August, which is approximately three million more than last year. Click here for more.


Students at Livingston High School Win HSNCT National Academic Championship

Students at Livingston High School recently competed in the inaugural HSNCT National Academic Championship with three teams. The “A” team, which won the championship title, beating 336 other academic teams across the country, included senior captain Robert Wang, senior Kevin Zhang, and juniors Arav Kaushik and Benjamin Laskov. In the final match, LHS defeated Northview High School of John’s Creek, Georgia, with a score of 455-175, according to Patch.


Updates on Roseland Police Officer Who Was Injured in Car Crash

The Borough of Roseland has provided an update on the condition of the police officer who was seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident that took place on June 20th, 2025, near Livingston Avenue + Becker Farm Road. “An initial surgery was successful immediately following the incident, and several more surgeries have taken place since then, [and] will likely be needed in the days, weeks, and maybe even months ahead,” the borough said in a newsletter sent to TapInto. “We are pleased to report that Officer Miller has feeling in his hands and legs, which, given the way the accident transpired, is truly remarkable and encouraging.”


Former Business Administrator to Return to Montclair School
District in Interim Role

Dana Sullivan, the former business administrator of the Montclair school district, who served in this role from 1993 to 2012, has returned as the interim business administrator. Her return to the district comes after the former business administrator and board secretary, Christina Hunt, resigned in June, according to Montclair Local.

Turtle Back Zoo Extends Summer Hours with Family Fun Nights

Turtle Back Zoo, located at 560 Northfield Avenue, West Orange, has launched a new event series called Family Fun Nights, which allows guests and their families to enjoy the zoo and all its activities in the evening. Family Fun Nights will take place on select Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout July and August from 4PM to 7PM. August 7th will be Turtle Back’s Sensory-Friendly Family Fun Night. Livingston Fire Department Seeks Donations for Annual Fund Drive

The Livingston Volunteer Fire Department is currently seeking monetary donations as part of its annual fund drive. “As a non-profit organization, this fund drive allows us to provide fire prevention education, award scholarships to LHS seniors, and actively participate in different community functions throughout the township each year,” the department shared in a Facebook post. Montclair Historic Preservation Commission Selects 2025 Winners for Historic Preservation Awards

The Montclair Township Historic Preservation Commission, a committee dedicated to “protecting Montclair’s architectural heritage and increasing public awareness of the unique historical and cultural dimensions of the Township’s buildings, streetscapes, and landscapes,” as per its website, has selected the 2025 winners of the annual Historic Preservation Awards. This year’s awardees include: Saving Bluestone Sidewalks and the house at 63 Park Street for the Bricks + Mortar Preservation Award; the Olmstead Oak for the Bricks + Mortar/Adaptive Reuse Preservation Award; and Our Lady of Mount Carmel for the Preservation Service Award. An awards ceremony was held at the Council Chambers of the Municipal Building on June 12th.
