School Employees + State Workers in NJ Now Required to Vaccinate or Undergo Testing

As of Monday, October 18th, state workers and school employees in New Jersey are now required to show proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or be tested once or twice weekly, according to NJ.com. Gov. Phil Murphy says the mandate is to protect the state against the virus, despite pushback from some government employees and protestors. 


Free Memory Screenings in New Jersey

Memory screenings are helpful in preventing dementia, and residents can get one for free in New Jersey. Adults over the age of 50 are encouraged to get screened at one of three locations on either Wednesday, November 3rd or Wednesday, November 17th. Information Released About Pfizer Booster Shot Eligibility in NJ

The New Jersey Health Department has released a list of occupations that provide eligibility for some to get a COVID-19 booster shot, per NJ.com. Jobs that increase the risk of transmitting the virus are included on the list. Those in older age groups and with other health problems are also eligible for the booster shot. 


Montclair Council Discusses Rent Control and Bellevue Theatre Rehabilitation

The Montclair Township Council discussed continuing issues over rent and urban development in a meeting last week, reported Tap Into. Public comments focused on rent control, which has been an ongoing issue over the last 18 months. Councilor-at-Large Robert Russo elaborated on what the Council has been doing to try and solve the issue. The Council discussed plans to restore the Bellevue Theatre, which continued at subsequent meetings on Tuesday, October 19th and Thursday, October 21st. 


Children Safe After School Bus Crashes in Montclair

A school bus crashed in Montclair last Friday after an elderly SUV driver ran a stop sign, according to Montclair Local. Luckily, all the students on board were unharmed, and four adults on the scene were treated at area hospitals for minor injuries. 


Dog Costume Contest Coming to Brookdale Park in Newark

Get ready to show off your fabulous furry friends at the “Strut your Mutt” dog costume contest at Brookdale Park, reported Patch.  The contest is on Saturday, October 23rd at 9:30AM, registration at 9AM. Participation is free, and there will be prizes for the first, second, and third place winners. 


Newark Baptist Church and Montclair Synagogue to Hold Joint Community BBQ

Bethany Baptist Church and Bnai Keshet Synagogue are hosting a joint barbecue on Saturday, October 23rd, from 4PM to 6:30PM, per Baristanet. The barbecue is open to the community and will be behind Bnai Keshet at 99 South Fullerton. The barbecue is an effort from the two congregations to deepen their relationship as part of the interfaith organization New Jersey Together.


Local Coffee in Montclair Hosting Art Fundraiser for PAWS

Local Coffee in Watchung Plaza is raising money for PAWS by selling artwork during the month of November, according to Baristanet. The art was created by longtime Montclair resident Ann Kraus, whose work has been displayed widely in the New York and northwestern Connecticut area. Proceeds will go to PAWS, the local animal rescue organization.


Montclair Receives AAA Rating for Fifth Year in a Row

Standard & Poor’s Global Rating Services gave a AAA rating to Montclair Township’s series GO improvement bonds and series GO school bonds, as well as the Township’s existing GO debt, reported Baristanet. AAA is the highest rating possible, which lowers a town’s borrowing costs for projects and saves taxpayer dollars. This is the fifth year that Montclair has received this top rating. 


‘Survivor’s Brunch’ + Hispanic Heritage Celebration Happening in Newark

United Community Corporation will be hosting two events at West Side Park this week, according to Patch. The Hispanic Heritage Celebration took place on Thursday, October 21st, and a Survivor’s Brunch for Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence survivors will be on Sunday, October 24th from 2PM to 5PM. West Side Park office manager Christian Marsette stressed the importance of hosting these events in order to show the community that “everyone is important” and that the people of the park are “here to support them.” In a partnership with the Essex County Department of Health, UCC will provide COVID-19 vaccinations at the events.


La Serra Gardens Kicks Off the Garden State Holiday Season With Festive Open House

With the holiday season just around the corner, La Serra Gardens is hosting a holiday open house on Friday, November 12th from 6PM to 9PM. La Serra Gardens posted information about the event on Instagram this week, which will have shopping, drinking, and other festive activities. La Serra Gardens is a family-owned home and garden center that has been open since 2019. 


Annual Pet Costume Contest Taking Place at Downtown Montclair Pet Market 

L & B Healthy Pet Markets is adding to the spooky festivities happening in Montclair with its pet costume contest. The event, hosted by OC Raw frozen dog food, will take place on Saturday, October 30th from 11AM to 4PM. In a post on Instagram, L & B shared more information about the contest, and how participants can take home OC Raw frozen dog food giveaways. 


Halloween Fun at Fall-o-Ween Festival in Verona Town Square

Participants can enjoy pumpkin painting, a petting zoo, goodie bags, trick-or-treating, a costume contest, and more at the Fall-o-Ween Festival in the town square in Verona this Saturday, October 30th, from 10Am to 12PM.
