At the corner of Bloomfield Avenue and Park Street, Efi’s Gyro first opened its doors in June 2021 to serve fresh, authentic Greek gyro to Montclair. Originally named Avra, this Greek food spot recently had a name change and is run by Efi Mihalis — a young woman making waves in the Montclair restaurant scene. Read on to learn more about Efi’s Gyro, located at 521 Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair.

The Atmosphere

Efi’s Gyro is a casual and cozy restaurant. Its décor is interesting without being overwhelming or intimidating. Its use of blues in its materials, like the gorgeous terracotta tile around its ordering counter, really reflects the restaurant’s vibe — positive and calming. It feels like you are in a café on Greece’s seaside without having to leave New Jersey.

Patrons can enjoy their meal at one of its café-style tables or countertop window seats, giving you a great view of the hustle and bustle outside on the streets of Montclair.

About the Owner

The restaurant is owned by a long-time Montclair family, the Mihalises — with one of the family’s daughters, Efi Mihalis, running it. The Mihalises are tapping into their deep Greek roots and sharing their family recipes with our community through Efi’s Gyro.

This is the owners’ first restaurant but they are no strangers to Montclair, having lived and worked in town for many years. Efi is front and center in Efi’s Gyro, cooking up savory meals for its patrons.

The Mihalises emigrated from Greece and the restaurant is the family’s way to honor their heritage.

The Menu

The menu packs a heavy punch of flavor. The gyros and bowls are customizable with sauces and toppings to satisfy all palates. Efi’s Gyro serves up multiple meat options, including vegan-friendly “impossible meat” so that everyone can enjoy these Greek specialties together.

Avra

The pita and sausage are imported directly from Greece to ensure the most authentic experience possible. The pies, like spanakopita, meat pies, and sweet pies, are all made in-house. In addition, the sauces are all homemade and the tzatziki is not to be missed. It adds a great creaminess to the gyro without making it feel heavy.
