Parcel in Montclair is a consistent and comforting staple to many. Its whimsical supply of curiosities, vintage goods, and especially unique stationery is heart-warming and oh-so special. Parcel, originally at 608 Bloomfield Avenue, is moving to the second floor of 11 Park Street. The Parcel concept will change to a more interactive experience from the retail model, but hang on to its whimsical roots. Parcel’s History

Founder and owner Nancy Laboz refers to Parcel as a Purveyor of Fine Paper Goods and Curious Vintage Objects. Her vision from the start came from an igniting passion for collecting all sorts of trinkets growing up, whether it be old pieces of paper or small vintage objects. Opening in the summer of 2003, Parcel got its name by definition: “A present, a package; a collection of things.” The meaning of Parcel lends itself to the concept. It is so much more than a general store, filled to the brim with handmade stationery and paper goods, curious small objects and gifts, vintage memorabilia, and more.

Before owning Parcel, Nancy worked as an accessories editor and stylist at Real Simple among other magazines. Her passion for curation and creativity eventually led her to open the store after moving from New York to Montclair.

Inside the store, shoppers are met with every kind of crafting material and stationery item you can think of. The old-school vibes and unique offerings create a cozy environment that anyone can spend hours in. The spot also won Best DIY Experience in MG’s Best of 2021 guide.

The Move + Vision

After 22 years owning Parcel as a retail shop, Nancy told The Montclair Girl: “I found myself craving a different rhythm, one that embraces a slightly slower pace, deeper creativity, and a more balanced life.”

A rent increase on the Parcel space was the sign she needed to keep moving forward. Her concept for the new space values quality over quantity with a commitment to intentional experiences rather than transactions, and a more personal connection to the community.

Rather than a traditional storefront, Parcel will now live on the second floor of 11 Park Street, tucked away like a hidden gem. Parcel will be a showroom and atelier, open once a week each month to the public. Each month, the showroom will highlight a new theme, with new products and displays for the public to enjoy. Although it will be open less frequently, the showroom will serve a greater purpose, full of magic, inspiration, and a more intimate and meaningful shopping experience.

“The shift isn’t just about business– it’s about embracing the freedom to create, the joy of a slower pace, and the beauty of living life on our own terms,” Nancy told MG.

Nancy shared that although the move may feel bittersweet, this next phase of Parcel is an exciting one and can serve as a message to other small businesses facing the same challenges. Change may be scary, but can also fuel inspiration and new adventures. The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place this Saturday, May 3rd at 12PM.
