Film Screening and Panel: Versailles ’73: American Runway Revolution at The Newark Museum of Art

May 9 @ 7:00 pm

admission is free; registration required

Versailles ’73: American Runway Revolution explores the fashion face-off that pitted the French haute couture establishment – Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, Pierre Cardin and Emmanuel Ungaro – against American designers Anne Klein, Stephen Burrows, Oscar de la Renta and Halston. In front of an audience of 700 millionaire luminaries, including Andy Warhol, Princess Grace of Monaco, Christina Onassis and Josephine Baker, the Americans catapulted ready-to-wear to global stardom.

After the screening, join Director Deborah Riley Draper, along with Pat Cleveland (fashion model, walked the runway at the Battle of Versailles) Mikki Taylor (Editor-at-Large, Essence magazine) and Kristen Joy Owens (curator of The Story of Newark Fashion exhibition) as they discuss the significance of this pivotal moment in fashion history, and its adjacency to the museum’s groundbreaking fashion exhibition featuring the designs of Stephen Burrows, on display through June 2nd.
