In 2017, two New Jersey sisters ventured to bring something different to the Montclair food scene: comfort food with a conscience. What arose out of this dream was Coffee + Cornbread, a local breakfast staple serving its namesake with organic ingredients and vegan options. Nearly six years later, Monique + Monica are leaving Montclair and headed for Belleville, after an unfortunate scam incident effectively drained funds the duo had saved for an upcoming renovation. Coffee + Cornbread closed its 38 Upper Montclair Plaza location on Sunday, November 5th, but you can continue to support this local business at 500 Cortlandt Street in Belleville soon. Read on for what we know about Coffee + Cornbread’s Montclair closure + its relocation to Belleville as a takeout and delivery spot.

The Closure + Relocation

Over the weekend, Coffee + Cornbread took to its Instagram to share news of its upcoming transition. Under a black-and-white photo of the restaurant’s exterior, the owners dedicated a lengthy note to locals that read:

“Regrettably, we fell victim to a scam that drained the funds allocated for our much-anticipated remodeling project. Despite this setback, we are determined to continue serving you, our loyal patrons, in the best way possible.

We have made the difficult decision to close our physical doors temporarily effective Sunday, Nov. 5th. However, this is not the end for Coffee & Cornbread, but rather a strategic shift in our operations. Instead, we are relocating to Belleville, NJ pivoting to a takeout and delivery-only model to ensure that you can still enjoy the food you’ve come to love from the comfort of your home or office. ”

The post went on to say that while Monique and Monica feel mixed emotions about leaving Montclair, the new model “empowers [them] to streamline [their] operations, ultimately leading to lower pricing for [their] valued customers.” The sisters expressed gratitude to local residents, thanking them for “being a part of our Coffee + Cornbread family. We can’t wait to share our delicious meals with you once again.” See the full post below.

As for the menu, the post confirmed that it will largely stay the same, with the same dedication to organic, non-GMO ingredients and allergy-friendly options.

Coffee + Cornbread remained open in Montclair until Sunday, November 5th, before relocating to its new Belleville outpost. The new location is setting up shop at 500 Cortlandt Street, operating out of a cloud kitchen. Orders can be placed online for pickup or via DoorDash, Uber Eats, and GrubHub. The team is hoping to open Friday, November 10th.

It’s worth noting that Belleville is a short 15-minute drive from Montclair — and although Coffee + Cornbread’s absence from Upper Montclair will certainly be felt, we can’t wait to see what the future has in store for these foodie sisters.
