For a small street in such a busy area of Montclair, Church Street is consistently filled with an abundance of activity. The beloved street is filled with charming shops and restaurants that Montclair residents and visitors continue to visit and enjoy. Now, you don’t even have to worry about cars or trucks getting in the way of your Church Street journey. Starting on Friday, June 19, the street will be closed to motor vehicles, turning it into a pedestrian walkway, and stay blocked until Sunday, June 21. Afterwards, it will continue to close for one weekend every month until October. Read more to learn about the Church Street pedestrianization.

Church Street Pedestrianization
Currently, Church Street is a one-way street for motor vehicles, excluding trucks over four tons, which are prohibited from entering unless for delivery. Montclair Township’s new pedestrianization project will change that rule so that cars will not be allowed to go through Church Street. This will be mandated for one weekend per month through June to October. The pilot program will allow the road to become a pedestrian walkway instead from Friday–Sunday. Church Street will be closed to vehicular traffic between Bloomfield Avenue and South Park Street.
The first weekend will begin on Friday, June 19th, at 9:00AM, during Montclair’s Juneteenth Flag-Raising Ceremony at the corner of Church Street and Bloomfield Avenue. Following that, it will close for the third weekend of the month. The next dates it will close after June will be from Friday, July 17th, to Sunday, July 19th.

Jacob R. Nieman, Director of Montclair’s Complete Streets program, tells the Montclair Girl that there will be several activations, performances, and other special events in the space throughout the summer. The town has collaborated with stakeholders to ensure the temporary walkway will remain safe and available for others. Montclair Township continues to seek more partners for programming, planning activities, and activating the space in general. Any follow-up questions can be directed to its website.
