New Jersey law continues to work its way toward legalizing marijuana for adult, recreational use. As of April 21st, 2022, limited purchases of recreational marijuana started to be permitted through select companies and dispensaries approved by the NJ Cannabis Review Commission. 13 medical marijuana dispensaries, known as Alternative Treatment Centers (ATC), got the go-ahead to begin adult-use recreational marijuana sales back in April — and 3 more got added to the list as of June. Now, Ascend in Montclair has also received the okay to start selling marijuana recreationally, which could start as soon as this Friday. While there are many ATCs in New Jersey, not all have retail sales available (nor will some ever have it). There were seven companies that were selected to permit retail sales to operate several dispensaries throughout the state, but many locations are still working with local officials to finalize retail marijuana laws or will remain solely for medical-use purchases.
Note: At this time, the sales of adult-use marijuana are restricted to adults over the age of 21. Consumers can purchase up to one ounce of cannabis or up to five grams of cannabis concentrate, or some combination thereof, not to exceed one ounce, or the equivalent, of usable cannabis as a cannabis-infused product in solid, liquid, or concentrate form. Consumers must provide a government-issued photo ID with their birthdate. There is a 6.25% state sales tax and municipalities can add additional sales tax.
Atlantic County

Ascend in Montclair just received its license for recreational marijuana on August 16th. It will likely begin selling recreationally as soon as this Friday, August 19th.
