Diners can find everything from upscale restaurants and casual laid-back spots, which are perfect for date night, friends’ night out, or even a solo date. Fans of traditional and experimental rolls will love what Montclair’s local spots have to offer. From raw to cooked fish, these dishes are nutrient-packed and colorful. Aozora European Fusion + Sushi | 407 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair

Aozora has a modern and upscale atmosphere, serving as an excellent location for a romantic evening out. Here, diners can find cooked sushi like the Avocado, Jade, and Spider Roll or raw sushi like the Alaska, Yellowtail, and Volcano Roll. The spot also has Sushi Bar entrees like the Salmon Lover and Chirashi Sushi. We suggest ordering white rice or seafood pumpkin soup to pair with your sushi.  The homemade desserts include Belgian Flourless Chocolate Cake, Bread Pudding, and Mango Mousse Cake.

Halcyon offers contemporary American cuisine in the heart of Downtown Montclair. Halcyon has nine sushi options to choose like Rainbow Roll, Tuna Tacos, and Salmon Crudo. The Rainbow Roll is made with tuna, salmon, avocado, mango, and tobiko, and is wrapped in soy paper. On the menu, you will find even more seafood like halibut, seafood paella, and grilled oysters. If you’re feeling take-out, you can find Halcyon on DoorDash.

Nori | 561 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair + 406 Bloomfield Avenue, Caldwell

Nori’s A La Carte menu has Sushi and Sashimi versions of Scallops, Salmon, White Tuna, Crab Stick, and more. The sushi dinners are served with soup and salad. We suggest ordering the Love Boat to share with someone special. This dinner comes with 12 pieces of sushi, 24 pieces of sashimi, and five special rolls. For dessert, Nori serves up multiple flavors of ice cream and mochi. Nori is closed on Tuesdays.

Proven Poke Co | 19 Church Street, Montclair

Proven Poke Co specializes in Hawaiian poke bowls which consist of raw fish served over rice and served with vegetables and various toppings. Here you can find sushi or poke burritos like the Bang Bang, Big Poppa, and California Love. The Bang Bang comes with shrimp tempura, scallions, cucumbers, jalapeño, spicy mayo, and chili garlic sauce. Proven Poke Co also serves musubi, chicken teriyaki, poke nachos, miso soup, and tater tots. For dessert, the spot has mochi ice cream and three flavors of Dole Whip.

Sushi Koshi serves up an expansive menu of over 15 a la carte options. You can order the Sea Bass, Shrimp, Fluke, White Tuna, and Salmon Roe, which are great to pair with a side of edamame, avocado fries, and gyoza. Vegans and vegetarians will love the Avocado, Sweet Potato, and Cucumber vegetable rolls. The spot also serves yakisoba, udon, ramen, and teriyaki dishes. Of course, you’ll have to end the night with dessert. Sushi Koshi has Mochi Ice Cream, Gold Fish Ice Cream (Taiyaki), and Green Tea Ice Cream.

Takara Asian Bistro | 605 Valley Road, Montclair

Takara has a sushi lunch special available from opening to 3:30PM daily, except for Tuesdays when the spot is closed. Diners can select from options such as Sashimi Lunch or Rainbow Sushi which are served with soup and salad. The a la carte menu features over 20 options like Black Pepper Tuna, Smoked Salmon, and Tamago (Egg Custard). Takara also serves up tempura, fried rice, noodles, and so many more dishes.

Toro Sushi | 44 Upper Montclair Plaza, Montclair

Toro Sushi’s menu features Crab Stick, Yellowtail, White Tuna, Avocado Mango, Cucumber, and Spicy Tuna. We suggest trying the Esther Special Roll, made with shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, avocado, and white seaweed. Toro Sushi serves up two classic dishes named after the area: the Valley Roll and the Upper Montclair Roll. You can also sample teriyaki, Katsu, fried rice, and hibachi dishes. To end the night, we suggest trying the fried ice cream, which comes in vanilla, green tea, or red bean flavors.

Veggie Heaven | 631 Valley Road, Montclair

Veggie Heaven serves up Cucumber, Avocado, California, Roast Chicken, Salmon, Dragon Rolls, and more. We suggest ordering the Chef’s Special Rolls which includes sweet potato rolled inside with avocado layered on top and topped with teriyaki and lightly toasted sesame seeds. Pair your sushi with wonton soup or scallion pancakes. We suggest finishing the meal off with one of Veggie Heaven’s premium non-dairy ice creams which include Vanilla Almond Bark, Chocolate, Wildberry, or Butter Pecan. This spot is open every day except Tuesdays.

This family-owned spot has an extensive sushi menu, with 50+ different types of rolls. Options range from a mango avocado roll, a shrimp tempura roll, + a spicy red snapper roll to an angry lobster roll, a butterfly love roll, and a crunchy eel roll.
